Goal: To create a small, three-dimensional sculpture or miniature diorama that represents a key character, object, or scene from the book, and to label it with historical facts learned during the reading.
Projects are due to Mrs. Young on or before Tuesday, March 3rd and will be on display during Open House. Â
Choose Your Focus: Decide which element from the book you want to sculpt. You may choose one of the following:
Ancient Soccer Ball: A historical-looking ball with symbols painted on it.
A Key Character: Jack, Annie, or a historical person they met.
A Small Scene/Setting: A miniature model of Stonehenge or the playing field.
A Significant Object:Â The Ring of Truth, a jersey, or a soccer ball.
Sketch it Out: On a piece of scratch paper, draw a simple sketch of what your final 3D sculpture will look like. Label the materials you plan to use (e.g., clay, cardboard, paint).
Find Your Fact: Locate one interesting historical fact you learned from reading Soccer on Sunday that connects to your chosen sculpture. Write this fact down; you will include it in your caption.
Build the Base (Optional): If your sculpture needs a foundation (like a grassy field or a pedestal for a ball), use a small square of cardboard, foam, or a paper plate.
Sculpt Your Form: Using your chosen materials (clay, papier-mâché, salt dough, or even found objects like toilet paper rolls and construction paper):
Start with the basic shape and gradually add details.
For characters, focus on the clothing or posture that makes them recognizable from the book.
For the soccer ball, make sure it looks aged and has the proper size relative to your base.
Let it Dry: If using wet materials (like clay or papier-mâché), allow ample time for your creation to dry completely before moving on.
Add Color: Paint or color your sculpture using markers, crayons, or tempera/acrylic paint. Focus on historical colors or the colors described in the book.
Create the Caption Card: On an index card or small piece of paper, write the following three items clearly:
Title: (e.g., "The Soccer Star," "Stonehenge Sun," "Ancient Soccer Ball")
Connection to the Book: A short sentence explaining why this item/character is important in Soccer on Sunday.
Historical Fact: The single historical fact you researched in Part 1.
Assemble the Display: Secure the caption card next to or under your finished 3D statue/diorama. You may need a small piece of tape or glue to attach it to the base.
