1 John 2:20, 27 “But you have an anointing (unction) from the Holy One, and you know all things… But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that any one teach you… But as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie (counterfeit)…”
1 Corinthians 1:21 “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God.”
The words “anoint” and “the anointing” are largely practiced in Pentecostal, Full Gospel or Charismatic circles but also to some degree… most true Christian churches.
ANOINT & ANOINTING DEFINED
▪ The act of smearing or pouring of an unctuous (oily) substance on the head or body of a person on an object.
▪ The practice of anointing for religious reasons came from the normal use of oil in cosmetics and medicine.
The PRACTICE OF ANOINTING BEFORE BIBLICAL TIMES was common in Babylon and Egypt
According to ancient writing a king was anointed in the 16th century B.C.
Another document refers to the anointing of Baal.
ANOINTING IN ANCIENT HEBREW

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, My cup runneth over.” Psalm 23:5
Israel used the anointing with oil especially to anoint three kinds of people:
(1) Prophets
(2) Priests
(3) Kings
Yet one man was never anointed for more than one office.
1 Samuel 16:13 - “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him (David) in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”
Verse 14 - “But the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.”
David’s anointing symbolizes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon God’s servant for his work--with authority, strength, and honor.
THE PROPHET ELIJAH, ANOINTS THE PROPHET ELISHA
When Elijah found Elisha plowing in the field, the scripture says when he passed by him and threw his mantle on him.
There is no record of him being anointed with oil. However, many believe it was explained by Isaiah in Chapter 61
” The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor;” Isaiah 61:1
ANOINTING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
The ministry of Jesus began after His baptism in water.
Matt. 3:16 “…Jesus came up immediately from the water and behold the heavens were open to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.”
Immediately Jesus…
being filled with the Holy Spirit was immediately led into the wilderness…
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit!”
RETURNED TO NAZARETH - TO THE TEMPLE
Luke 4:17-18 “…and He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah.”
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord!
He closed the book and sat down, and the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.”
