Pura Belpré was the first Latina (Puerto Rico) librarian at the New York Public Library (NYPL). She used techniques that weren't used at the time to tell stories, from using using puppets, arts & crafts as tools to teach kids new ways to express themselves. She also instituted a bilingual story hour and began buying Spanish language books for her patrons.
