November 2022-GarageBand
GarageBand is a fun and powerful mobile recording studio that helps you create original music, sound effects, and audio stories that can engage any listeners.
While this app may be slightly notorious for being intimidating to users, small steps on your part will open up a world of creativity for even your shiest students. You can have your students make songs to reinforce vocabulary, record poetry verses, or start your very own class podcast!
Lesson Integration Ideas:
Use the "Fun" voice filters and let you students practice their skip counting or math facts . Bonus points if they can add a loop or two and make their own song showing off their understanding.
Have your students pair up and 'interview' a classmate that is acting as an important historical figure. They can write and rehearse questions, and turn their interview into a mock-podcast by adding intro and closing music and sound effects.
Have your students show of their poetry skills by either reading an already -written poem (or one that they've written themselves) in rhythm, and adding music that matches the theme and mood of their poem. (App smash and include the audio recording onto a Keynote or Pages document that has the written poem with student artwork to accompany and really take the project up a notch.)
Check out this podcast that these 3rd graders made to accomodate their GT showcase project they did over learning about gardens. They scripted, rehearsed and added in all their own loops to create this one-of-a-kind project!
You can use GarageBand even with KINDERGARTENERS! We practiced skip counting in 2nd Grade, math facts in 4th grade and regular counting in Kindergarten. After the students recorded, they chose a "fun" voice to mask theirs. Talk about total engagement.
