English Friday has arguably been the most highlighted English programme in our school in the past few years, and has so far received the most attention and recourses. Over the years, it has been developed into one of the most comprehensive programmes in our school.
Taking place every Friday with different themes every month, the English Friday programme offers students in our school a staggering amount of opportunities to immerse themselves in a rich English environment. The monthly themes include Movies, Video Games, Sports, Technology, Crafting, Creative Drawing, Christmas, New Year, Around the World and Music, and have received large student attendance counts every time.
In each of the English Friday mornings, a morning video show, The English Friday Morning Channel, will be broadcasted to the whole school. In the English video show, students and English teachers will introduce the activity of the day and review activity of the past week. Eye-catching special effects and trendy music are often edited together with pictures and videos to attract students’ attention.
English Publication:
Hebron Times and Hebron Anthology
The English Department has put major emphasis on English publications and has published the 3 editions of the English newspaper Hebron Times, and 3 editions of the English anthology Hebron Anthology in the past few years. Both English publications have received critical acclaims from students, teachers, parents and the general public.
Hebron Times is an 8-page-long, A3 sized English newspaper, highlighting the latest developments of English language teaching in the school, including the principal and English panel heads’ messages, English activities, elite students’ sharing, NET teacher’s sharing and our latest English-related programmes.
Hebron Anthology is our English anthology, compiling 60 pieces of English essays and 60 pieces of artwork, all produced by our students. As conveyed by the cover arts of the past few issues, William Shakespeare and the famous paintings by Vincent Van Goh, Hebron Anthology is a testimony of both our students’ literacy and artistic talent.
Helping students to achieve good results in the HKDSE has always been one of our main focuses. With the support from the principal and the school, the Saturday HKDSE English Tutorial Class was successfully launched in September, 2022. About 50 students in total were invited to come back to school on Saturdays to receive extra training on tackling HKDSE past paper and improving their English skills in general. The programme received very positive feedbacks from students, which was reflected both in students’ surveys and attendance rate. Most importantly, students’ HKDSE English results of the past year has seen significant improvements, of which the Saturday HKDSE English Tutorial Class has no doubt been a positive factor. The programme is being re-run and doubled in size in the current academic year, providing nearly 100 students with extra tutorial lessons on Saturdays this year.
School Based English Vocabulary Notebook
We understand the importance of students acquiring a sufficient amount of English vocabulary to help them success in both using the English language and in English examinations. With the school-based vocabulary notebook tailor made by the English Department for our students, in total about 3000 new English words, theme-based and matching students’ learning progress in their textbooks, were introduced to our S1-S5 students in their secondary school study in our school.
The Raz-Kids Online Reading Platform
We understand and value the importance of reading. Over the past years, to facilitate our department-based reading programme, the English Department has been renewing our subscription to the Raz-Kids online reading platform, a winner of numerous awards, including CODiE and EDDIE Awards and a Teachers' Choice Award for the Classroom, providing our students free access to more than 800 levelled English eBooks online. English teachers carefully guide our students as they progress through different reading levels, providing opinions on picking the suitable English books, as well as assignments to consolidate students’ knowledge related to the books they are reading.
