English Friday
English Friday has arguably been the most highlighted English programme in our school in the past few years, and has so far received the most attention and recourses. Over the years, it has been developed into one of the most comprehensive programmes in our school.
Taking place every Friday with different themes every month, the English Friday programme offers students in our school a staggering amount of opportunities to immerse themselves in a rich English environment. The monthly themes include Movies, Video Games, Sports, Technology, Crafting, Creative Drawing, Christmas, New Year, Around the World and Music, and have received large student attendance counts every time.
In each of the English Friday mornings, a morning video show, The English Friday Morning Channel, will be broadcasted to the whole school. In the English video show, students and English teachers will introduce the activity of the day and review activity of the past week. Eye-catching special effects and trendy music are often edited together with pictures and videos to attract students’ attention.
Monthly Theme – Board Games
With dozens of board games laid across multiple tables, it’s a perfect time after lunch for junior form students to challenge each other’s board games skills, under the help and guidance of senior form students, using English.
Monthly Theme – Chinese New Year
During the month of Chinese New Year, students get to enjoy one of the most interesting fusion activities – writing traditional Chinese New Year greeting messages in English! Student write their messages on traditional Chinese style red paper in Chinese calligraphy style, and they get to bring the paper back to their homeroom!
Monthly Theme – Christmas
Christmas is the time for festivity and partying! With drinks, pizza, and Christmas songs, students mingle with each other and share the enjoy of the special occasion in English. Students will also enjoy crafting activities with different Christmas themes.
Monthly Theme – Creative Drawing
In multiple creative drawing sessions, students demonstrate their creativity and talent by producing large pieces of drawings in groups, then sharing about their creations in English. Teachers are constantly surprised by collective effort of our students.
Monthly Theme – Movies
Who doesn’t like blockbuster movies? The lunch time movie show usually draws a large crowd. Students enjoy chilling with friends after lunch in the canteen. In addition to receiving entertainment, students learn English by participating in movie quizzes using iPads.
Monthly Theme – Singing and Dancing
For consecutive weeks, students give singing and dancing performances during lunch time for students to enjoy. In the month of singing and dancing, the canteen area transforms itself into a “Got Talent” styled stage!
Monthly Theme – Technology
During the month of technology, students make use of iPads to play English educational games, and try out some of the latest technology such as games making use of augmented reality and virtual reality. Students also conduct English quizzes related to the latest technology in the world.
Monthly Theme – Video Games
We embrace the fact that students are drawn to video games, and we try to take advantage of the popularity of video games I motivating students to use English. In addition to holding actual gaming sessions, we invite students to share pre-game strategies, post-game reviews in English. We even have weeks of sessions exploring the history of video games in English.
