Students are nominated for membership at the end of their sophomore or junior years based on the following qualifications:
Scholarship
Students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
Service
This quality is defined as the voluntary contribution made by a student to the school or community without direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service. Chapters may establish criteria that stipulate specific quantities of projects or service hours for candidates, as well as expectations of service obligations once a student is selected as a member.
Leadership
Student leaders are often viewed as those students who are resourceful, good problem solvers, involved in and promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and who are both organized and organizers.
Character
The student of good character can be said to be one who upholds principles of morality and ethics; is cooperative and responsible; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and is a good citizen.
This selection process occurs between February and April of each school year. Students are not members of the GBHS National Honor Society until they have successfully qualified in all portions of this selection process and have been inducted into the organization.
If you have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.8+ by the spring of your sophomore or junior year, NHS will send you a Jupiter message informing you of your eligibility and inviting you to enter selection for membership.
If you decide to enter selection for NHS membership, fill out a student candidacy form on our Google Classroom and turn it in by the due date listed on the student candidacy form.
The GBHS NHS advisers then ask all GBHS teachers to complete recommendations for eligible candidates whom they have taught in the past two years. Students should NOT be asking teachers for recommendation letters. Weak teacher recommendations can hinder admission to the NHS. Teachers use this rubric to recommend students based on their character, scholarship, and leadership.
The school principal and the NHS Advisers assemble a Faculty Council of at least 5 GBHS faculty members who receive and review the following materials for each candidate: the students' completed candidacy forms, the students' teacher recommendation(s), and the students' discipline records for the past two years. All of these factors will be noted and considered by the Faculty Council, and weak elements can hinder admission to the GBHS NHS.
Based on the GBHS Faculty Council's consideration of your candidacy form, teacher recs, and discipline record, Jupiter messages will be sent to inform candidates of their selection or non-selection in April.
If selected for the GBHS NHS, the Induction ceremony is in late May. Details will be communicated directly with selected students and their families.

Be careful about honor societies or organizations not affiliated with or sponsored by Grand Blanc High School!
The Grand Blanc High School National Honor Society is a chapter of the National Honor Society run by NASSP.
The GBHS NHS is not affiliated or connected with the National Society of High School Scholars or any other outside academic honor organization.
Often, students and parents will receive emails from outside academic honor organizations and enroll their students with those organizations with the belief that those memberships are affiliated with our chapter of the NHS. This is not the case. Please research the differences between our organization and these others here.
Any communication regarding potential membership or membership in the Grand Blanc High School National Honor Society will come from this chapter's advisers, Mrs. Riek or Ms. Kenney, and will be clearly recognizable as official Grand Blanc High School communication.
