Learning Target: Students will explain the technological developments that made sea exploration possible.

Triangular sail that allowed ships to sail against the wind, increasing maneuverability and making early oceanic sailing possible.
An astrolabe was a special instrument that explorers began using to navigate at sea in the 1400s. It was used to measure the positions of the Sun and other objects in the sky. That helped navigators estimate time and their own position on the sea.

It found its way to Europe about 200 years later, and by the time Columbus and Magellan embarked on their voyages, every seafaring ship had a compass and extra needles. was also possible to determine how far north or south a ship was.
