Mission: The mission of Central Middle School’s library is to be a welcoming space where people feel valued while learning takes place. Through guided instruction and collaboration opportunities, the library serves as place for learners to become future ready citizens. The librarian fosters the use of collaborative spaces, between students, teachers, and community members to empower patrons to read, create, learn, explore, and share.
Vision: At Central Middle School, we want to ensure that all of our students are equipped to be careful, conscientious consumers of information. We learn skills related to good digital citizenship, heightened literacy, and real-world research. As consumers of information, we must be good readers. Reading is an essential skill for the advancement of individuals and communities; therefore, the library offers books for everyone and technologies to aid in that process. The library is the epicenter of learning at CMS. We encourage our Vikings to be good readers who become great leaders!
Mrs. Brown's philosophy about being a librarian:
The role of the librarian is kaleidoscopic in nature. Libraries exist to serve the patrons; however, the needs of the patron are always changing as technology advances and the world evolves. Therefore, the librarian must be prepared to serve his/her patrons with respect while aiding them in their quests for deeper understanding of an everchanging world. At the core of my philosophy as a librarian is the respect for intellectual freedom. Students should have access to any materials they choose, no matter what their "level" of reading or their age may be. I believe that books are for everyone and that the library collection should represent every voice. Readers need to find books on the shelves where they can see themselves in the character(s). So, while the world is constantly changing, libraries and books must be, too.
Library programming must meet the needs of its patrons while also encompassing the technology trends and advancements of the time. Programming should be a careful balance of what patrons want and what librarians know patrons need. It must promote literacy, build community, foster collaboration, and encourage personal growth and learning. As a school librarian, it is my job to foster a love of learning among my students and to provide programming and materials that support their quests for knowledge. If a student leaves the library with greater knowledge or a deeper desire to learn and explore, then I have a sense of accomplishment.
