Our Math this week is a review of our Fraction standards. It is so important that students visually understand fractions and can see how they are pieces of the whole. This is what the first math sheet covers. Math 2 covers fractions on a number line. In reading, we choose a poem to review. Students need to read the poem multiple times to understand the meaning before answering the questions. The second reading passage has a science focus on outer space. We hope you enjoy working with your students this week!
This week we are working on math skills of adding/subtracting in real life situations in Math #1. Use this opportunity to experience a fake shopping trip with them. Math #2 is a division situation that kids need to figure out how to share equally among a group of people. Both of these model real life situations that you can use daily to grow your student as a mathematician.
Our reading practice in third grade this week starts with reading about plants and learning about the parts of plants in science. Our second passage is a fun, fiction passage followed by comprehension questions. Make sure your student can tell you about what they read before they start answering the questions. They should also be able to reference the text to show how they knew their answer was correct.
One way you can work through this with your student is by reading and discussing the passage together before looking at the questions. Ask your student what is the main idea? What is something they already knew? What is something they learned? What is something they want to know more about? As they answer the questions require them to underline or point out where in the passage they found the answer. The math questions are similar. Your student should be able to explain how they solved the problem to you using words and they should also be able to draw a model of the problem using pictures and explain that to you as well. If you need assistance or clarification please ask your child's teacher.
