About the author

Garrett Wieck grew up in the sleepy, but growing, town of Morgan Hill, California. It was named after Morgan Hill, a person, and not for the iconic hill, El Toro, of which the citizens were quite proud of. Growing up without much to do at the time, a kid had two choices: stay inside or rabble-rouse. He chose the former. He dedicated his time to playing video games, consuming media, and falling in love with stories and the way they made him feel.

It started with filming dumb videos with his sister and friends. Together, they created some truly terrible “movies”. Each completed project, despite their overall quality, never quashed his desire to tell more stories of his own. He would run around with his likeminded friends, armed with film equipment to show off their grand ideas to the world. When it came time to look for a university that would suit him, he would move to San Francisco to pursue a film degree.

During his time as a cinema major at San Francisco State University, he also joined an Improv club. The club militaristically bashed into his skull the importance of making everything count in the narrative. He continued to create films, improvise scenes, and play a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons all throughout his time at SFSU. It all paid off, culminating in him graduating with a BFA. After that, he hibernated on raw creativity for several years as life got in the way.

Sometime mid-pandemic, he remembered the joy he had in creating stories. While films were expensive to make, he refocused his efforts on writing short stories in the “The Circle of Mundus” series. He then moved his attention to his debut novel, “Maple Ridge: Mall of Horrors”. It is a novel which was largely based on uncertain times, and all the hurdles and feelings that came with it. His main focus is to write stories that are set in fantastical versions of the world we live in. 

Now, he spends his daily life with his wife Allison, cats Minnie and Daisy, and a pug named George in Benicia, CA. A full circle moment of going from one small town to another with the same amount of creative spark that he had cultivated back in his youth.
