How many credits is each course worth?
- Core courses are worth 1.00 credit. This means the course meets every day for the entire year.
- Some courses are worth 0.50 credit. This means the course meets every other day for the entire year.
- Some courses are worth 0.25 credit. This means the course meets every other day for a semester.
How many electives can my student select each year?
- 6th grade students will be able to select 0.25-0.75 credits.
- 7th and 8th grade students will be able to select up to 0.75-1.25 credits.
How long are the classes?
- All core and elective classes are 57 minutes in length.
What resources should I utilize to help guide their selection?
- The 2019-2020 GVMS Course Selection Guide and the Course Selection Form. Both of these documents are located under the "Updates" section of our website.
If the schedule rotates, how will the students know what day of the schedule it is?
- The new schedule will run on a four-day cycle (A-D day).
- Students are encouraged to keep a copy of their schedule in their planner.
Do any courses require a prerequisite?
- The only classes that require a prerequisite are the eighth grade world language courses.
- Example: 7th Grade Spanish 1A, 8th Grade Spanish 1B
Can a student participate in two or more Performing Arts (Band, Orchestra, Chorus)?
- Yes, they may. If a student takes one or more of the Performing Arts, it will count as 0.50 credit course every other day for the duration of the year. The Band, Orchestra, and Chorus teachers will structure a rotating schedule during the assigned time.
Do students have to select Team Sports if I am interested in participating on an interscholastic team?
- No. Team Sports is a PE elective. Interscholastic sports teams are organized by the athletic department and occur after school.
If I have concerns about how my child will be impacted by the new schedule, whom should I contact?
- The school counselors are always a good starting point. The building administrators are another good point of contact to answer questions.
