What does it take to earn a spot on a team?
Teams consist of the 3-4 top scorers from each school. State-bound contestants typically spend 3+ hours a week studying material in order to advance and compete at the highest level.
How many students can compete in a contest?
Most contests allow 3-4 contestants per school to compete in a contest, plus an alternate.
Can I compete in more than 1 contest?
Yes, but consult with your coaches or the coordinator to ensure that your contests don't take place at the same time. It is not recommended to compete in more than 2 contests due to the time commitment and contest times overlapping at meets.
How do I advance?
From the district meet, you can advance to the regional meet. From the regional meet, you can advance to the state meet. In order for a team to advance, the team must have the highest score at the meet or secure a wild card spot. Individuals can advance with a first, second, or third place finish.
What if I want to compete in a contest that isn't listed on this site?
Unfortunately, we need to have teacher coaches available to lead a team for each contest. If the contest you're interested in isn't listed above, that most likely means there isn't a coach to fill that role OR our school has not participated in that contest recently and we are not ready to compete for it at this time.
Can I earn scholarships competing in UIL Academics?
Yes, all contestants who advance to the state meet can apply for a TILF Scholarship their senior year (see info below). Participation and success in UIL Academics is also a great way to bolster your college applications and even resumes/job applications during your college years. Building a strong relationship with you coach and upholding you commitment to your UIL team is also a great way to build your letter of recommendation pool.
Since its inception, TILF has awarded more than $32 million to UIL competitors, with current scholarships ranging from $500 to $20,000. For information on specific scholarship criteria, visit www.tilfoundation.org.
