Once students have finished Beginning Band, they will audition for placement into one of the Advanced Bands.
Concert Band is the Sub Non-Varsity ensemble of the Lumberjack Band. This class is for students who are in need of more reinforcement of the fundamentals taught in Beginning Band. It is designed to be a smaller class where students can get more one-on-one instruction for BOTH Directors.
Concert Band members will work on their own music, but can earn the opportunity to work on the same music as Symphonic Band, by Director's discretion and by proof of student progress.
Concert band members are required to perform at Solo & Ensemble Festival.
The primary goal for Concert Band members is to be promoted to Symphonic Band by the end of the school year.
Symphonic Band is the Non-Varsity ensemble of the Lumberjack Band. This is the natural placement for students after Beginning Band, unless the student earned a placement in Honors Band. Symphonic Band is the 'training ground' for Honors Band.
Symphonic Band is designed to get students used to rehearsing every day in an ensemble setting, as (they met in instrument classes in Beginning Band) and continue to reinforce fundamentals taught in Beginning Band.
For this primary reason, Symphonic Band does not have many public performance opportunities. However, there are events in which they will be asked to perform alongside Honors Band (pep rallies and football game performances)
Select Symphonic Band members will be invited to audition for GISD All-District Band and All-Region Band, and are required to perform at Solo & Ensemble Festival.
The primary goal for Symphonic Band members is to be promoted to Honors Band at the end of the school year.
Honors Band is the Varsity ensemble of the Lumberjack Band. It is comprised of our most talented and experienced players in the program. This is the natural placement for students after Symphonic Band, unless the student did not meet the requirements of earning placement in the ensemble.
While it does not happen all the time, it is possible for a 7th grader to earn placement in Honors Band after Beginning Band. In this case, the experience for the student is like "skipping from 6th grade into 8th grade." For this reason [among others], much consideration is taken into placing a 7th grader into Honors Band.
Honors Band is designed to teach more in-depth concepts and performance techniques. It also gets students ready for high school band, so it is our most visible ensemble on and off campus (pep rallies, football game performances, Elementary Tour, etc.).
Honors Band members are expected to audition for GISD All-District and All-Region Band. Honors Band members are also required to participate in Solo & Ensemble Festival.
Only the most dedicated, driven and focused performers are considered for Honors Band.
Sectionals allow students in Symphonic Band and Honors Band to meet in small, same-instrument groups [similar to Beginning Band] to further develop ensemble concepts and instrument techniques taught in class.
Sectionals are once a week and are graded based on preparation of the material for the week.
Monday - Tubas & Trumpets (in the event of a single-day Holiday, the groups will meet during rehearsal the on Tuesday)
Tuesday - Clarinets & Horns
Wednesday - Percussion & Trombone, Euphoniums, and Bassoon
Thursday - ALL Saxophones
Friday - Flutes (in the event of a single-day Holiday, the group will meet during rehearsal on Thursday)
Fall Sectionals will start the 3rd week of school and end after All-Region Band auditions in November.
Spring Sectionals will start in January and conclude after the UIL Concert in April.
