Malaysian nationals who did not take the early entry iGCSE in Year 9 may choose to take iGCSE Malay as an option. They may also opt for the Malay elective programmes (assessed / non-assessed) in order to comply with the Ministry of Education requirements. This course is also open to non-Malaysians who are keen to improve their Malay and have at least two years prior study of the language.
This course is designed to build students’ confidence in the key skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading in Malay. The iGCSE covers the following topic areas:
Everyday Activities - Home life and school - Food health and fitness - Personal and social life - Self, family and personal relationships - The world around us - Hometown - Places - The world of Careers/Future plans - Occupations - The international world - Tourism/Holidays.
Learning Malay will enable you to use this language as a means of practical communication as Malay is widely used by the local population. Imagine having to struggle just to tell the taxi driver your destination, that he is overcharging you or when trying to get the seller in Petaling Street to reduce the price of the goods he is selling. You will learn to be more confident when speaking and relating to a native speaker. Knowledge of Malay is also beneficial when travelling in Indonesia. Learning this subject also gives you a better insight into the culture and way of life in this country.
100 % Exam
All four skills (Speaking, Reading, Listening, Writing) are awarded equal weighting
25% Listening Comprehension Paper 1
25% Reading Comprehension Paper 2
25% Speaking Paper 3
25% Writing
Studying Malay is compulsory for Malaysian passport holders. Malaysian students who do not have an iGCSE in Malay must choose either the iGCSE Malay course or one of the Malay elective programmes. This subject is a Ministry of Education requirement.
Expat students should also consider taking this course as it would be useful to them in their daily lives
It must be remembered that this course is the foreign language course. A more challenging course is available - the First Language Malay course.
Malay is the official language of this country. Most of the official matters are conducted in Bahasa Malaysia.
