There are different pathways of study in IGCSE Maths. You will either take the Extended (A*-D) or the Core (C-G) paper, this will be discussed with you when you start the course.
If you study for the Core course, you will take your exam in November of Year 11. If you achieve a C, you will have time to study for the extended paper in June of Year 11. If you do not get a C, you will re-sit the Core paper in June of Year 11.
If you study for the Extended course, you will take your exam in June of Year 11. There will be opportunities, where appropriate, for you to study topics beyond the IGCSE syllabus e.g. Logarithms.

Not only is maths an excellent foundation for the Sciences, Engineering and Economics but it will enable you to solve problems in a logical and strategic manner. With an arsenal of facts, you will approach questions from many directions, challenge each others’ thinking and concisely present your solutions.
Additional Mathematics is not in the option blocks here at GIS. If you show exceptional progress and attitude in year 8, you will be given the opportunity to opt into/out of the Fast Track Course (in April of year 8). This will be decided by the Maths department.
You would complete IGCSE Mathematics in year 10, followed by Additional Mathematics in year 11.
The requirements for A level maths are: achieve a grade B at IGCSE Extended. For Further Maths, we ask for a grade A* at IGCSE Extended.
The fast track course is designed for students who demonstrate exceptional progress and attitude in year 8. They must be regularly achieving high grades and show their teachers that they are academically mature enough to cope with the demands of the course. The final decision will be made by the Maths department who are best placed to find the most appropriate pathway for each student.
Problem solving is a key skill in mathematics, it is improved by exposing yourself to different questions, and discussing possible solutions with your peers. Nrich website has a great bank of problems, updated every month.
Generally students who have not studied the year 9 course at GIS will not be ready for the fast track scheme. Each case is looked at individually.
