Students will be selected to take this course. These students will usually be those who have received EAL support in Key Stage 3 and for whom the ESL course is the best and most appropriate pathway for them.
You will read from a range of resources and real world texts which will contribute to your knowledge in the other subjects you are studying. Working in groups and individually, you will be given opportunities to discuss and research relevant themes and issues. Explore your own interests, learn to present your viewpoint in writing and develop oral communication proficiency as these are key skills in the world of academics and work.
English as a Second Language is a great way to prepare for college writing, reading and presentation skills. Expect to read from a variety of authentic texts on current and controversial issues, to take part in discussions and oral presentations and to write on a range of topics and themes. Having opinions and presenting them coherently are vital in this course.

You may have learnt some skills earlier in your Year 9 lessons. Now you will further develop writing, oral and reading skills on current issues to help you improve academic language proficiency.
Based on current issues, you will give formal presentations, conduct research writing, read widely and practise skills needed for successful reading and writing in college/university.
Most universities require a standardised English language proficiency score. This course will help you when you sit for English language proficiency exams such as TOEFL, IELTS Academic or the CAE to gain admission to university or college.
The skills learnt here are useful from tertiary level learning to the working world.
