Anne Frank was a German-Jewish, World War II Holocaust victim whose diary, documenting her time hiding from the Nazis, has been read by and inspired millions from around the world.
Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929 to Otto and Edith Frank. Her father was a lieutenant in the German army during World War I, and he later became a businessman in Germany and the Netherlands. Frank also had a sister named Margot who was three years older than her.
Fleeing Nazi persecution of Jews, the family moved to Amsterdam in 1934. The Nazis took control of the Netherlands in 1940, and in 1942 the family was forced to go into hiding in concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne Frank's father worked.
The family was discovered and arrested by the Gestapo on 4 August 1944, and they were all sent to concentration camps. This is where, a few months later, in 1945, Anne Frank died at the age of just 16.
Otto, the only survivor of the Frank family, decided to fulfil Anne's greatest wish to become a writer and published her diary in 1947.
Anne Franks' The Diary of a Young Girl has been read by millions around the world, having been translated into over 70 languages since its initial publication in 1947. As a result, she is one of the best-known victims of the Holocaust and is symbolic as a figure against anti-semitism and prejudice.
