A Message from Our Trustee
Dear Families,
It is hard to sum up this past school year; it truly has been a year like no other. Many of our students have been transitioning between virtual and in-person learning. Others have spent the full year learning virtually as part of our Elementary and Secondary Virtual Schools. Whatever option you have chosen, this year has been challenging and has asked a lot of all of us – students, families, staff members and community partners. We have had to be flexible and adaptable in how we learn, teach and work. We have had to be diligent in learning new routines and adhering to public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. And, we have had to pay more attention than ever to supporting mental health and well-being during this challenging time.
This pandemic has affected different families in different ways, and I want to thank you for your patience, support and resiliency throughout this challenging year. I also want to take this opportunity to remind you that resources are available on the Board website, including community resources, mental health supports, tips and resources to support online learning, and tips for speaking with your child about COVID-19. These resources will continue to be available throughout the summer.
Despite the challenges this year, we have seen incredible examples of student learning and achievement. I am incredibly proud of the determination, resilience, creativity and perseverance demonstrated by our students. I want to wish a very special congratulations to the graduating class of 2021. This is an important milestone and while we are all disappointed that we are unable to celebrate in person as we would have hoped, we look forward to honouring our graduates virtually. Schools are working hard to make their virtual graduation celebrations a very special occasion. We are very proud of our graduates and wish you all the very best in the next chapter of your journey.
I also want to acknowledge the hard work of our educators and staff members who have maintained a focus on supporting students while navigating the challenges of the past year. Our staff members have shown a true commitment to their own learning in the service of our students, and have been participating in webinars, online training modules and other professional learning opportunities throughout the school year to enhance their own practices.
Earlier this spring, we launched the Board’s Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy, with the goal to “achieve racial equity in YRDSB schools for Black students and staff.” The strategy was co-developed by York Region Black community leaders, YRDSB staff and in consultation with students. Thank you to everyone who supported this work and participated in the launch. We look forward to continuing this essential work.
The Board is also preparing for the 2022 Municipal Election by undertaking a review of school board trustee electoral areas. The boundaries of the areas the trustees represent change over time due to population growth and changes in student numbers. We are committed to ensuring that, as the region’s population changes, electoral areas continue to reflect the communities we serve. Public input is important to the Board of Trustees during the electoral area review. Throughout the process there will be a number of ways for you to learn more about the review and to provide input. Information about the Trustee Determination and Distribution is available on the Board website.
As was communicated to families in May, we are looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year. Our goal is to create a learning model within the provincial funding allocation that meets public health requirements and is centred on the safety and well-being of our students and staff members. To help meet this goal, we are planning to implement a hybrid model of learning for elementary and secondary schools, a model several other school boards have been using during this current school year. Through this model, families will continue to have the ability to opt for in-person or remote learning, and placement for all students will be in their home school. I know there are many questions about what this will look like and what to expect in September. The Board continues to provide as much information as possible and has shared some frequently asked questions on the Board website about the model change for 2021-2022, this page will continue to be updated. As planning continues and information becomes available, we will provide regular updates to families. Please know that health and safety of our students, staff and families remains our top priority. You can also continue to find information on the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca and on Twitter @YRDSB.
As we go into the summer months, I want to thank you once again for your support over the past year, and to wish you all a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer.
As the school year comes to a close, I want to wish you and your families a safe, healthy and happy summer. I look forward to a time when we can welcome your children back into our schools again. We know that families have questions about what the return to school will look like. We will continue to share information with you as it becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue following public health guidelines and to stay connected.

Social media: What parents should know…
"Sharing information and images via social media is a part of daily life for many children and teens. Social media allows kids to communicate with one another, and to document and share what they are doing in real time. The networking power of social media means that it is not uncommon for kids to be connected with people they have never met in person. "

Help Central Park in Planning for the 2021-22 School Year
While we don’t yet know all the details regarding school operations for the Fall, our school has begun planning for 2021- 2022. In many respects, the work we do now is especially important, because our accuracy with anticipated enrollment helps us better plan, and optimistically, minimizes the need to move students across classes (‘reorganize’) in September.
Expectedly, the current situation presents some significant challenges. With the physical building closed, we may have less direct contact with prospective families inquiring at the school. Similarly, parents may be unsure how to contact the school to inquire about registration-related questions. We would ask our community for its help!
First and foremost, for all Face to Face and EVS families, if you know you will be moving out of the area in the months ahead or you know your child will be attending a different school, please let the office know as soon as possible, to help us be accurate with our enrollment estimates. Similarly, if you have a child who will be joining us at the school for the first time in junior kindergarten (or any other grade) and have yet to register, we would ask you to do so at your earliest convenience. And if you meet someone moving into the community, or have a neighbour with kindergarten-aged children, please encourage them to register sooner rather than later! To update any information or get the registration process started, simply email central.park.ps@yrdsb.ca.
This year presents some unique challenges for us in preparing for next year, so we thank everyone in our community in advance for their support with our school planning.

More information on how to join the virtual consultation is available on the YRDSB website.
The results of the consultation will be used to inform the 2021-22 school year budget allocation. Questions regarding the budget process may be directed to Budget20212022@yrdsb.ca.
As the holy month of Ramadan begins next week, we think of our Muslim students, staff and community. We wish that you continue to remain safe and healthy during your time of fasting, prayer and reflection.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are pleased to let you know that we are implementing a new telephone attendance reporting system, iNFORM, effective immediately. This is in addition to the online absence reporting already available through Edsby.
Regular and punctual attendance affects school success and is expected of all students. You are responsible for notifying the school before 8:45 a.m. if your child will be absent or late. We have a safe arrivals program so that we can account for the whereabouts of absent students if the absence has not been reported prior to our starting bell time.
To enhance our safe arrivals system, this new telephone system will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance. It will also confirm student absences that have not been verified by automatically calling you.
If your child is going to be absent or late you now have two options. Please let us know before 8:45 a.m. by either:
1. Calling the schools main phone line at 905-940-1444 and select the option ‘To report a student absence or late’
OR
2. Logging in to Edsby and using the “Report an Absence” feature. For more information on reporting your child’s attendance through Edsby, please see the online video tutorial to learn more (bit.ly/edsbyabsence).
Long-term absences or absences beyond the following day can be reported through the new telephone absence reporting system, Edsby or by contacting the school. If your child will miss more than 5 consecutive days of school, you must complete the Request for Vacation Form available through the school.
Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to ensure the safety of our students. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions.
We thank you for your continued partnership.
World Down Syndrome Day is held annually on March 21st, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 and the Province of Ontario since 2016.
With March 21st being a Sunday, at Central Park P.S. we’ll recognize World Down Syndrome Day and Ontario Down Syndrome Day this Friday, March 19th, in support of generating awareness and promoting a positive image of people with Down syndrome as being valuable community members, focusing on abilities.
One of the ways we are going to recognize World Down Syndrome Day is by encouraging all students and staff to wear mismatched socks for the day as part of a world-wide theme about loving differences. The #LotsOfSocks campaign exists to raise awareness of Down syndrome. All students and staff need to do is choose some mismatched socks that are going to get noticed.
This Friday, March 19th we encourage all our students and staff to ‘rock their socks’ for the joy of diversity! (And students and staff are encouraged to ‘rock their socks’ on the official World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st, as well!)
For more information about Down syndrome visit the Down Syndrome Association of Ontario and the Down Syndrome Association of York Region.
A reminder to families to review the COVID 19 screening tool on a daily basis. Students who exhibit one of the listed symptoms are expected to stay home. York Region Public Health school and child-care screening tool. In addition, please ensure that students are coming to school with spare masks to replace broken or soiled masks. Thank you to our families for supporting a safe and healthy school environment.
For many of us at Central Park P.S., March 20th signifies the beginning of a new season, Spring, and a chance to look forward to warmer weather. For some staff, students and community members from countries like Iran, Afghanistan, the Kurdish regions of Iraq, Turkey and Syria, throughout Central Asia and many more – the first day of spring is a New Year’s Festivity, also known as Nowruz (pronounced NO-ruz). While specific traditions vary from country to country, as different cultures add their own elements, the central theme is the same: a celebration of spring and a time for rebirth and renewal.
In recognition of Nowruz, students and parents and guardians are invited to participate in free activities during the month of March which focus on aspects of Nowruz traditions celebrated by different communities. Offerings include a poster competition, egg decorating, and traditional family games, among others. For more details, please see the Nowruz Event and Workshops Flyer.

The York Region District School Board is committed to championing equity and inclusivity. In response to continued evidence of anti-Black racism in Canadian institutions, including in education, the Board has co-developed an anti-Black racism strategy.
The Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy: Creating anti-racist and Black-affirming learning and working environments was co-developed by York Region Black community leaders, YRDSB staff and in consultation with students. The launch of the strategy marks a coordinated effort to address anti-Black racism at the Board.
On March 8, 2021 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. students, staff and families are invited to the virtual Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy launch event featuring guest presenter Robyn Maynard.
The program will examine anti-Black racism in educational institutions and unveil the Board’s strategy. The strategy is designed to dismantle anti-Black racism in all its forms in our schools and workplaces.
The systemic nature of anti-Black racism requires that school boards act proactively to support equitable access to quality education and opportunities for all students, and to challenge the marginalization of Black students, staff and families.
Please visit www.yrdsb.ca for more details and to register for the event.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Tuesday, February 16, 2021.
As noted in our communication last week, this year, when an inclement weather day is declared, school transportation will be cancelled and schools will be closed to students. This message does not apply to educators in Virtual Schools, whose schedules will remain unchanged.
Given the importance of adhering to our health and safety guidelines, schools will be closed to students on inclement weather days. If an inclement weather day is declared, synchronous learning will occur tomorrow. As students have been learning synchronously due to the school closures, this would continue tomorrow if schools are closed to students. Once students return to in-person learning, previously communicated inclement weather day procedures will be followed. We will re-communicate these procedures once students return to in-person learning.
For elementary students, the regular timetable will be followed for synchronous learning throughout the day. For secondary students who were scheduled to be in-school, the in-school timetable will be followed through synchronous learning (i.e., Block 1: 150 minutes, Blocks 2 - 4: 50 minutes).
Announcements will be posted as early as possible and no later than 6:00 a.m. Please check the following for updates:
· Student Transportation Services website: schoolbuscity.com
· Student Transportation Hotline: 1-877-330-3001
· @YRDSB Twitter account
· Board website (www.yrdsb.ca) and school websites
· Radio and TV media outlets
Please continue to monitor local media for up to date weather forecasts and take safety precautions advised by local authorities.
Our priority continues to be the safety of our students, staff members and families.
Dear Central Park Families,
Some elementary families have requested a change in their school program model from face-to-face learning to virtual school or from virtual school to face-to-face.
On January 27-28, 2021, elementary families received an email explaining the process for submitting a request. On February 1, 2021, a follow-up email was sent to families with the School Model Change request form. The deadline to submit the request was February 8, 2021. Only families requesting a school model change needed to complete this form.
The school board is currently reviewing the data and schools will be determining potential organizational changes due to the change in student numbers. This organizational process requires attention and time to ensure a smooth transition.
It is important to note that any change of learning model for a student will only take effect on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. With schools reopening Tuesday, February 16th, all students will follow their model of learning that they participated in before the December school closure.
Staff will continue to work diligently to ensure a successful transition for all students changing models. Regardless of the model chosen, YRDSB is committed to ensuring that the learning experience for students will be both safe and engaging.
We thank you for your continued support, patience and cooperation.
A reminder to parents that lunch drop-off is not permitted at this time in accordance to Board protocols. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to remain at school for lunch. There may be circumstances where students are given permission to go home for lunch so we kindly ask that students return at 1:50 pm and enter through the main doors so that we can track their attendance.
To minimize waste and enhance our cleaning efficiencies we need students to participate in our boomerang lunch program. This means that students will generate zero waste and will be expected to take home any green bin waste and all wrappings. Everyone's cooperation with this initiative will allow more time for our care taking team to engage in enhanced cleaning protocols throughout our school.
A waste-free lunch/snack contains no throwaway packaging and produces no food waste. Food and drinks are packed in reusable containers within a reusable lunch bag. As already mentioned, a boomerang lunch/snack means that any uneaten food and any waste material produced is returned home. For sanitary purposes, it is important that food and waste packaging be taken home in a resealable container or bag. Both a waste-free and a boomerang lunch allow parents to see what their children are actually eating during the day. A significant amount of waste is made up of unopened packaged foods, uneaten fruit, full juice boxes and half eaten sandwiches. Some Waste-Free Lunch/Snack Tips:
Use a reusable container for packing snacks/sandwiches (no more squished food)…empty margarine containers work well.
Cut fruit/vegetables into pieces so that some can be eaten at lunch and some can be saved for a snack later.
Label reusable containers to ensure they are easy to identify if they are misplaced.
Avoid drinks in packaging that cannot be resealed (especially for younger students) – NO glass bottles. After a few sips, drinks are often thrown out.
The Dollar Store carries reusable containers and lunch bags – great deals!
* Please join in us in supporting this important initiative. We are making a difference one lunch at a time!

A User-Friendly Guide for Building Social Skills in Children
Social skills like apologizing, turn-taking, dealing with disappointment, decision-making, sharing, respecting personal space and more, can help prepare students for success in many areas of their lives. There are many ways children can learn these skills, and many ways adults can help to develop and nurture them.
York Region District School Board has developed a user-friendly guide full of tips, resources and ideas to help caregivers and other adults:
Determine what social skills to teach,
How to teach them, and
How to support any child who many benefit from direct instruction and practice in learning social skills.
Play. Talk. Think. Feel: A User-Friendly Guide for Building Social Skills in Children covers a wide variety of skills and includes a number of activities, games, resources and more that can be used by family members, caregivers, educators and others to support social skill development.
We hope you find this resource helpful in promoting our common goal of supporting student achievement and well-being.
Message from Our Trustee
Dear families,
I hope that you and your families are healthy and doing well. I want to thank all of our students, families and staff members for their flexibility, patience and perseverance during the school closures. We understand that the pandemic is creating challenges and hardships, and we will continue to prioritize and do our very best to support the well-being, learning and achievement of our students during these difficult times.
There are resources on the Board website that students and families may find helpful, including tips for speaking with your child about COVID-19, support using technology, community and mental health resources and more at www.yrdsb.ca/school-reopening.
One of our priorities as a Board of Trustees is to Champion Equity and Inclusivity: we aim to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to remove barriers in support of all learners.
Anti-Black Racism
We want each and every one of our students to know that they are valued, welcome, safe and respected in our schools. We know that sadly that is not the reality for some students and that incidents of anti-Black racism continue to occur in our community and our schools. These incidents cause pain, make our students feel unsafe and affect their well-being and achievement. This is not acceptable.
In the coming weeks, we will be sharing information and inviting you to participate in the Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy: Creating anti-racist and Black affirming learning and working environments virtual event. During this event we will be unveiling our Anti-Black Racism Strategy, which was developed in coordination with families, students, community partners, educators and members of our senior leadership team. The strategy was developed in response to continued evidence of anti-Black racism, and it will be a critical tool to support positive change in the system and to improve the experiences of Black students and staff.
A series of training sessions, webinars and opportunities for learning will also be made available. Future communication will provide registration options.
I want to thank the members of the Anti-Black Racism Committee for generously giving their time, sharing their difficult experiences and their voice. We are committed to ensuring that this strategy is more than a piece of paper and are committed to doing the work to create more equitable learning environments.
I also want to acknowledge that February is Black History Month, and while we take this opportunity to highlight and celebrate the incredible contributions made by Black Canadians, we will also be looking forward to launching our Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy. We will also be continuing our celebration of Black excellence in our community and I encourage you to take the time to read the stories of some of the inspiring individuals learning and working here in York Region.
We all have a role to play in creating a community that enables everyone in it to thrive, and in doing this work, we will create a more inclusive and positive environment for all of our students and families.
Dear Families,
Thank you for your ongoing support this school year as we continue to adjust to changing circumstances associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The York Region District School Board is committed to ensuring our students continue to have effective teaching and learning through access to technology, resources and engaging learning experiences and environments.
To further support students and families, the Board will continue to gather parent/guardian and student feedback on learning environments. We want to hear from elementary families and students to better understand best practices and suggestions for student learning and well-being support.
We are using an online tool called Thoughtexchange to invite meaningful feedback from our students and families. Parents and guardians of elementary students are encouraged to support their children in responding to the Thoughtexchange. The current Thoughtexchange asks families and students:
What successes have you/your child experienced this school year?
What supports do you feel will increase your/your child’s learning and engagement experiences?
Please provide any comments or suggestions you feel may help us when considering the improvement of your/your child’s learning experiences.
To participate and learn more, please visit the YRDSB website. This opportunity closes on February 8 at 11:59 p.m.
Please visit www.yrdsb.ca/covid19 for school board information and www.york.ca/coronavirus for Public Health information.
Thank you again for your ongoing support.
We’d like to share a variety of wellness-related resources with families in our community.
A wide range of parent and guardian workshops are available through York Hills Centre for Children, Youth and Families, with topics including:
• Navigating and Accessing Mental Health Services in York Region,
• Conscious Parenting – Raising Teens,
• Triple P Seminars – The Power of Positive Parenting,
• Navigating Experiences of Grief and Loss,
• Understanding and Managing Challenging Behaviours,
• And Many More …
As well, many virtual offerings are being made available through Family Services of York Region, including language-specific Positive Parenting Programs in Cantonese, Mandarin and Farsi. Other programs include emotional and interpersonal skills development for teens, women’s support groups (including language-specific groups) and groups for adults on mindfulness and stress reduction.
Lastly, Kinark Child and Youth Services provide updated resources for children, youth and families during the pandemic.
We wish everyone in our community safety and good health. We thank you for your ongoing support of the school.

Please find below a Welcome Letter from the Director in a variety of home languages for parents of children who will begin Kindergarten in September 2021.
Kindergarten registration for September 2021 begins on January 15, 2021 for the 2021-22 school year. Children who turn four or five years old during 2021, live within the school boundary, and whose parents or guardians are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for Kindergarten.
There are several ways you can register for Kindergarten:
Online – Families can access the online Kindergarten registration information at yrdsb.ca/kindergarten. It is recommended that families use a laptop or a desktop, rather than a mobile device to complete this registration.
By email – Families can download the Elementary School Registration Form at yrdsb.ca/Kindergarten and email the completed form to central.park.ps@yrdsb.ca
By mail or appointment. You can mail completed applications to the school, or request an appointment to drop-off your completed paper application form. Families are asked to follow all school COVID-19 protocols while on site. All permitted visitors must wear a mask.
If you require support to complete the registration form or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office at 905-889-2448 or central.park.ps@yrdsb.ca. Please note, at this time, under our health and safety protocols, we cannot accept walk-in registrations.
Once you have completed your application, the school will contact you to schedule an appointment, to review and verify the required documents. Please note that appointments will be scheduled for a date and time after schools reopen to the public.
Our Kindergarten programs are caring and welcoming where children learn through exploration, play and inquiry. You can learn more at yrdsb.ca/kindergarten. We look forward to welcoming new students and their families to our school in September!
Please find information below regarding French Immersion Registration for Parents and Guardians of students in Year 2 (Senior Kindergarten) who may be interested.
Grade 1 French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations
What is French Immersion?
In French Immersion, students receive instruction in French in a variety of subjects from a teacher who speaks French fluently.
The French Immersion program begins in Grade 1 and is designed for children whose first language is not French.
In Grades 1, 2 and 3, all subjects are taught in French. Starting in Grade 4, time is shared equally between French and English instruction.
The French Immersion program continues in high school.
Secondary school students must earn at least 10 French Immersion credits to qualify for the French Immersion Certificate upon graduation.
Important Considerations
For the first few months of Grade 1, the children do not acquire skills identical to those learned by children in an English program as the focus is on learning in French.
There may be certain lags in English Language Arts skills in the first few years of the program, but by the end of the elementary grades, successful French Immersion students perform as well as their peers in a regular English program.
Communication with parents/guardians is in English including, but not limited to, report cards, newsletters and parent-teacher interviews.
Reading to a child at home in a child’s native language can strengthen literacy skills. Research studies confirm that children achieve greater academic success when parents read frequently (daily) to them.
There is only one entry point into French immersion in YRDSB; Gr. 1.
Information Sessions
This year our Information session for Grade 1 entry into the French Immersion (FI) program will take place virtually on January 14, 2021. A link will be shared with you via email where you will be able to view a pre-recorded information session which will include commonly asked questions and answers.
Registration
FI registration will begin on January 15, 2021. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2021, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can email or call their home school office and indicate their intention to enrol. The home school will notify the French Immersion school, and the French Immersion school will contact you by phone or email to collect any necessary information. You are asked to register by February 5, 2021. Registration during this period is not first-come, first served.
Late Registrations
Late registrations are those submitted after February 5, 2021. Late registrations will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis and will be considered subsequent to registrations received during the registration period should overflow be necessary.
Accommodation Plan
YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community’s Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student’s FI education. Space requirements at some schools may mean that siblings are in different schools for primary dual track French Immersion programs due to differing grade structures. Like any of our schools across the Board, changes to school boundaries, and/or the accommodation model for the French Immersion program may need to be considered when new schools open, a school experiences enrolment growth, and program changes occur. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools.
More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.
Is your child in grades four or five? Would your child enjoy collaboratively learning the Ontario Curriculum through the Arts?
If so, the York Region District School Board offers an elementary integrated Arts Program at Baythorn Public School. Students currently in grades four or five may apply for the arts@baythorn Program, where they will have the opportunity to explore the disciplines of Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, and Music in a cooperative learning environment.
To learn more about the arts@baythorn program, students and their families are invited to attend an information evening hosted virtually by Baythorn Arts staff on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Please visit bit.ly/baythorn_arts_info to add your name to the arts information list.
Online application processes will open on January 14th and will close on February 5th. Please refer to the flyer on the left for more information.
This week has kicked off Computer Science Education Week (December 7-13, 2020) where many students from all over the world have been participating in the Hour of Code. Computer programming–coding–is beginning to find its way into the Provincial Curriculum (in the 2020 Mathematics Curriculum, starting in Grade 1, there are explicit coding skills identified to improve problem solving and develop fluency with technology) and many students at our school and across York Region take part in the Hour of Code initiative. While coding may seem intimidating, at first, the Hour of Code is intended for even the earliest beginner –no experience is needed whatsoever!
This may be a wonderful opportunity to try something new with your children at home, too! The Hour of Code staff has created self-guided tutorials and videos on their website so other than your willingness to try, no programming background is required for these activities. If you want to get involved, simply visit code.org with your child and find an appropriate activity. Your child can design, code and play their own retro arcade game (very cool, with lots of options!) Or they can code a card for their grandparents. Or animate their name! Or even make their own music. Or literally hundreds of other possibilities, organized by grade! There are activities geared for all ages, even pre-readers!
While many students will get a taste of coding in the weeks and months ahead, don’t hesitate to bring coding into your own home. It’s a fun way to learn!

Dear families,
I hope that you and your loved ones are healthy and well. 2020 has been a challenging year in so many ways, and the global pandemic has affected individuals and families in different ways.
I want to reassure you that we continue to work closely with York Region Public Health and to prioritize the health and well-being of our students, staff members and families. It continues to be important that we adhere to the health and safety measures in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. You can learn more about what schools are doing at www.yrdsb.ca/school-reopening.
While we have seen cases in some of our schools, we continue to work with public health to respond quickly, identify cohorts that need to self-isolate as a precautionary measure and take all appropriate measures. I want to thank all of our students, families and staff members for their diligence in adhering to the public health recommendations and health and safety measures in place in our schools.
One of our priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan is to foster well-being and mental health. As a result of the pandemic, many of us are facing changes and new challenges that can take a toll on our mental health. It is more important than ever that we check in on one another and practice self-care. There are mental health resources for students and families on our Board website that address the unique nature of our current situation. You can also find information about our Mental Health and Addiction Strategy and the work we are doing in schools to promote positive mental health and provide support for students.
While there are challenges, we also continue to have so many reasons to feel positive. Our students continue to impress us with their kindness, creativity, innovation, resilience, courage and perseverance. Visit us on YouTube at YRDSBMedia to see just some of these stories.
In the coming weeks and months, many of our students and families will be celebrating days of significance and holidays, and I wish you all the very best for the season. While we may be celebrating a little differently this year, I hope everyone has a safe and happy winter break and we look forward to welcoming students back into our in-person and virtual schools in January.
Central Park, let’s come together to show a little school spirit! We will be hosting a spirit day every Friday until the end of 2020.

Friday, December 18, 2020 - Winter Holiday Day
Wear your winter hat, scarf, and winter or holiday themed clothes!
Dear families,
This year, we are doing many things differently in our schools to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and support the health and safety of our students, staff members and families. As we enter the colder months, we have also reviewed what it will look like when inclement weather days are declared and school transportation is cancelled.
We usually try to keep schools open as much as possible, and in previous years, schools have remained open when school transportation is cancelled. This year, however, given the importance of adhering to our health and safety guidelines, we have made the decision to close schools to students when an inclement weather day is declared and school transportation is cancelled. Please do not send your child to school when an inclement weather day is declared. We are unable to guarantee appropriate coverage for students on inclement weather days when school transportation is closed and classes cannot be combined.
Please take the time to make plans in the event of an inclement weather day school closure. Please note that before and after care programs will not be operating on inclement weather days. For on-site, full-day child care, please confirm with your childcare operator. We recognize that this may be an inconvenience for some families. This decision was not made lightly and made to prioritize the health and safety of students, staff members and families.
There are rare occasions when school transportation is cancelled due to extreme cold weather and not road conditions, and schools will remain open for students.
Student learning will continue:
Students attending elementary school in person will be provided with learning activities for the day through their Google classroom and teachers will be available online to support students.
Students attending secondary school in person will shift to virtual learning for all of their classes for the day.
Elementary and secondary virtual schools will operate as normal.
Communication to families
Decisions about school transportation and school closures will be made as early as possible and no later than 6:00 a.m. We will do our best to notify families in advance. Our priority continues to be the safety of our students, staff members and families. If you have any questions, please speak with your school principal.
Transportation cancellations or school closures will also continue to be communicated through:
· Student Transportation Services website: www.schoolbuscity.com
· Student Transportation Hotline: 1-877-330-3001
· Board website and school websites
· @YRDSB Twitter account
· Radio and TV media outlets
Families who have provided the school with their cell phone will also receive a text message, unless you have opted out of this service. Please contact your school if you have any questions.
For more information on inclement weather days, please visit our website www.yrdsb.ca.

Why Shaming Your Kids Isn't Effective Discipline
You've probably seen countless examples of parents shaming kids online and in public. From dramatically escalating consequences—and dishing the details to anyone who'll listen— to 'calling out' troubling behaviour on Facebook and Instagram, publicly shaming kids can seem effective at first. It certainly gets their attention, right? But the problem is that it never works in the long run as a tool for shaping your kids' behaviour. In addition...

Parents should receive a communication through Edsby indicating that the Interview Scheduler is now open for bookings. It is important to note that you will only be able to book an interview time if you have signed up for Edsby. If you have problems please contact the school for assistance.
For several years we have been using School Cash Online, an online payment method, for parents and guardians to submit payments for various school events, activities and meal programs. Even though we are currently not offering our usual lunch programs and field trips etc., we would like to invite everyone who has not registered their child(ren) for online payments now. This will enable us to move forward smoothly and quickly when our schedules and routines return to normal after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
Registration instructions are linked to help you register your child(ren) for online payments. The multiple language feature in this program supports translation and makes registration easy for all. You will need your child’s student number to register. This nine-digit number can be found on your child’s Edsby information screen. If you have trouble locating this number, please contact the school and we will look it up for you.
Please take a moment today to register now for School Cash Online.
Important information to support digital literacy & citizenship.
A reminder to Grade 8 families who have interest in their student applying for the Grade 9 International Baccalaureate Program at Milliken Mills High School. The IB program has an application process. Please contact the school for details for admission into the program.
Parent-Teacher Interviews for students in JK through Grade 8 will be scheduled for after school on November 12, 2020 and on the morning of November 13, 2020. This year all interviews will be conducted virtually.
Central Park P.S. will continue to use an online process through Edsby to manage our Parent-Teacher Interviews scheduling. Edsby is an intuitive, cloud-based platform that will allow families to easily reserve times to meet with their child’s teachers. YRDSB in partnership with Edsby have created a secure platform that protects the privacy of information for our YRDSB families.
If you already have an Edsby account from past years, there’s nothing you need to do at this time. The Parent-Teacher interview schedule will open for bookings on November 2nd at 10:00 a.m. Teachers will send confirmation e-mails to parents or guardians who booked an interview on November 10th, including details on how to access the virtual interview platform.
If needed, parents may request interpreters to support the interviewing process by simply adding a note when booking online. Please appreciate that we have limited availability for interpreter requests. We encourage families to invite a family member or friend to support the interview conversations in lieu of a school appointed interpreter.
If you do not have an Edsby account, you will need to create an Edsby account to access the online appointment scheduler with their child’s teachers for Parent-Teacher Interviews. Only families who create an Edsby account prior to the schedule being opened on November 2nd will have access. If you need help setting up your account for the first time, please contact the school office.
For help with using Edsby, please visit https://www.edsby.com/help/parents/.
If you have any other questions about this process, please contact our main office. central.park.ps@yrdsb.ca
Important Timelines for Parent/Teacher Interviews
YRDSB will continue to coordinate the Grade 3 Gifted Testing process. This two part screening process will offer eligible candidates access to Roy H. Crosby's Grade 4 Gifted Program. More information will be forthcoming from Student Services.
This year, Halloween will look different for York Region families. In light of COVID-19 precautions, door-to-door trick-or-treating is not recommended by Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health for modified Stage 2 areas, including York Region.
The health and safety of our students remains a top priority. For students who wish to celebrate Halloween at school, please keep these reminders in mind:
When planning costumes that no replica weapons of any kind are allowed.
Costumes should be respectful of others. Symbols or objects representative of a person’s culture or religious beliefs should not be worn as a costume.
Due to COVID-19 precautions, please be aware that:
Students will not be able to use washrooms to change into costumes.
No Halloween masks are to be worn and students should only use single use make-up (no sharing of make-up).
Students who are required to wear PPE face masks (Gr. 4 - 12) must continue to do so, and students in younger grade (FDK - Gr. 3) are encouraged to continue to wear their PPE face masks.
Costumes should be of simple design (to limit personal items being brought to school), and treats cannot be shared.
For more information on how to stay safe this Halloween and for alternate Halloween activities, please visit York Region Public Health’s website.
Please note that on October 30th, the focus of the day remains on instruction, any Halloween related activities are optional, and students will have a choice to participate in alternative activities. While students will be allowed to dress up, they must follow Board Protocol.
York Region District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy #668.0 in accordance with the Ontario Safe Schools Act, includes the following mandatory expulsion criteria: “A student shall be expelled from school if the student commits one or more of the following infractions while at school or engaged in a school-related activity (as set out in the Ontario Code of Conduct): (a) possessing a weapon or replica weapon, including a firearm.” Students celebrating this occasion in costume at our school must comply with this policy. Costume accessories including, but not limited to, toy guns, knives, axes, swords, etc. are not in compliance with York Region District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy #668.0. Similarly, costumes should be respectful of others. For example, if something is representative of a person’s culture or religious beliefs, then it should not be worn as another person’s costume.
As always, we wish to promote healthy eating at our school, and strongly discourage students from bringing candies that are in abundance after Halloween to school. We kindly ask our community to be especially mindful that nut and nut products —often found in Halloween candy—are not brought into the school, as well. Central Park P.S. endorses a healthy snack philosophy, where preferred options for snacking, such as a variety of fruits and vegetables, are widely available for our students to enjoy.
We hope all our students who celebrate have a fun, safe, and healthy Halloween!

Dear Families,
On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, you are invited to join us for Central Park's Virtual Meet the Teacher Evening. Due to Health and Safety priorities, this year’s event is being held virtually (online). Each family will be invited (via email) by their child’s teacher(s) to a Google Meet where they will have an opportunity to meet the teacher, hear about the upcoming year, take a peek into the school/ classroom, and have an introduction to the new Ministry Math Curriculum.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
Staff will deliver two half-hour sessions beginning at 6:30 p.m. (Session 1: 6:30-7:00 p.m. & Session 2: 7:00-7:30 p.m.) in an effort to support families with multiple children
You will receive an email from your child’s teacher with information about how to join the virtual event. A stable internet connection is needed to join.
Once you join the meeting, please follow the meeting guidelines below:
Please keep your audio on mute so all participants can hear
Please turn your camera off
Please be aware that during the Meet the Teacher Evening you must refrain from:
recording any aspect of a Google Meet (including pictures, voices or video) using internal or external recording devices;
taking photos or screenshots of anything other than when given explicit permission or direction by the teacher to do so (e.g. a visual used for instructional purposes that won’t be reposted later).
distributing/posting any recorded, copied or distributed materials in any way, including to all social media platforms; and
editing or manipulating materials in any way.
Here are step-by-step instructions for logging into the Google Meet from a computer or Chromebook. If you are using a mobile device, use the Google Meet guide for mobile devices. You will be using your child’s YRDSB Gapps login.

Every day, parents/guardians and students over 18 are responsible for reviewing and adhering to the checklist from York Region Public Health. This checklist has been recently updated to reflect the Ontario government’s revised COVID-19 Screening Tool for Children in Schools and Child Care.
Please note that the new screening guide applies to children only and the adult screening has not changed. Thank you for working with us to protect the health and safety of students, staff and families and to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Our first School Council meeting was scheduled for Oct. 5th, however, no community members registered for our meeting which resulted in its cancellation. Our next scheduled virtual meeting is Monday, November 2nd at 6:30 p.m. Those wishing to serve on the School Council as chair or co-chair, secretary, treasurer, or as an executive member need to complete a School Council Nomination Form (fillable form linked and also contained within the forthcoming electronic School Startup Forms Package). The completed form can be returned to the school office with your child, e-mailed back to the principal, Mr. Valentim, or completed within the electronic School Startup Forms Package. Those seeking a position must be in attendance at the next meeting. It is expected that School Council Executive members attend all regularly scheduled School Council meetings and events.
Please note that there can be many parents, guardians and community members who consistently attend School Council Meetings and strongly support School Council events who are not executive members. Everyone is welcome to attend and support the work of the school.
We will be using a platform for the meeting called GoToMeeting. You will be able to join the meeting via computer (preferable), tablet, smartphone, or phone. There is a browser-based version that can be run on many computers, however for greater compatibility and functionality you are encouraged to download and install the software. GoToMeeting apps can also be found on the app stores for your tablets or smartphones. Please complete this step prior to the School Council meeting.
If you are interested in attending the next School Council Meeting and Elections, please register using this short form. The meeting link will be shared prior to the meeting with all registered participants. We thank you for your continued support of our school.
We look forward to working with the School Council this year!
Register here so that a GoToMeeting link will be sent out to you in advance of our virtual event.
As shared by our Public Health Nurse, we ask all families and staff to use this self-screening tool, each morning, prior to coming to school. We appreciate the cooperation of our school community in supporting our efforts to create a safe environment for all.
Thursday, October 15th
LGBTQ youth disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities. Each year, millions go purple for Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying. Pledging to “go purple" on Spirit Day is a way for everyone — global and local brands and companies, world leaders, celebrities, neighbors, parents, classmates, and friends — to visibly show solidarity with youth and to take part in the largest, most visible LGBTQ anti-bullying campaign in the world.
We are in need of School Assistants to support our lunch hour supervision. This is a paid position that does require a vulnerable screening check. If you are interested please contact our office staff at 905-940-1444.

We are encouraging all students and staff at Central Park P.S. to wear an orange shirt to school this Wednesday September 30th.
The Orange Shirt Day movement started in 2013 to highlight the pain and suffering of thousands of Indigenous children who were sent to residential school throughout the last century. The colour of the shirt is connected to the experience of Phyllis Webstad who was sent to Cariboo Residential School near Williams Lake, BC, in 1973. Six-years old at the time, Phyllis went to her first day of school wearing a new bright orange shirt. New clothes were a rare thing for the young girl, who was being raised by her grandmother. However, upon arriving at the school, she was forced to remove her orange shirt and wear the school’s institutional uniform instead.
The shirt has since gone on to become a symbol of a national movement that recognizes the suffering of Indigenous children at residential schools across the country and to show a renewed commitment to ensure that every child matters.
Across the York Region District School Board, staff and students will wear orange shirts on September 30th in the spirit of Reconciliation and to stand in solidarity with survivors and all those impacted by residential schools.
Traditionally, we’ve been able to collect misplaced student items in a ‘Lost and Found’ bin, where students could rummage through to find their belongings and eventually items could be displayed in the school foyer for the community to view and retrieve. Given the current situation, we are not able to continue with those earlier practices and inevitably we won’t be able to store unclaimed items indefinitely. And to make matters more challenging, the range of temperature on these Fall days finds students going out to recess with jackets and sweatshirts … and leaving them behind on the field and tarmac, notwithstanding our many reminders to students to collect all their items.
But you can help! The easiest way to ensure your children don’t lose their items is to label them. While we make efforts to return lost items to students whenever possible, we are far more successful when students’ names –a label sticker or even simply a name in permanent marker on an inner clothing tag–can be found.
We thank you for your support in helping reunite lost items with their owners!
It’s been forty years since Terry Fox set out on his ambitious attempt to run across Canada in an effort to raise money for cancer research. It’s been forty years since Terry set the goal of raising $1 for every Canadian. It’s been forty years since Terry Fox was forced to abandon his run in Thunder Bay Ontario, when the cancer that had taken his leg returned, spreading to his lungs. And it’s been forty years since Terry Fox passed the torch on to us. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going.”
As history would have it, Terry was able to see his wish fulfilled. The CTV network organized a telethon in support of Terry’s cause and the nation responded. By February of 1981 the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fund eclipsed twenty-four million dollars, the (then) national population. Less than five months later, Terry would lose his battle to cancer. He was 22 years old.
Though forty years have passed since the original Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox is honoured and recognized across Canada and internationally for his heroic quest to eradicate cancer and his trailblazing attitudes toward disability. With over three-quarters of a billion dollars raised in Terry’s name to date, schools across Canada honour him by participating in an annual school event. This year, the National School Run will be held on Wednesday, September 30th 2020.
Central Park Public School has participated in this annual event for twenty-three years and the school has raised an incredible amount for the cause over the years. While our event will look different this year, and classes will go out individually to walk on the tarmac and field, our resolve remains unchanged. Similarly, the school will not be collecting donations directly. We’d ask that anyone wishing to contribute to this most worthwhile cause, to please make an online donation in the name of the school directly to the Terry Fox Foundation website -
With your donation, our school will continue to contribute in an important way to the ongoing effort to eradicate cancer in our lifetime. Thank you in advance for your support.
We would like to share with our community that our first School Council meeting and elections will be held on Monday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m. virtually. If you’re new to the York Region District School Board or have not yet set up an Edsby account, you will receive an invitation to do so. Edsby is an intuitive, cloud-based platform that allows families to engage with the school in various ways, including enabling parents to report student absences or to schedule a Parent-Teacher Interview in November.
If your already have an Edsby account, there’s nothing you need to do. If you do not have an Edsby account, please anticipate an email with instructions on activating your account. If you require any assistance with setting up your account, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.
Our thanks for your support.
Last week we shared about a number of health-related forms that need to be completed for students with anaphylactic and/or other medical conditions. These forms have now been updated to allow you to fill them in electronically, and they are linked below.
If your child has an anaphylactic condition please complete an Anaphylactic Health Care Plan. Similarly, complete an Asthma Health Care Plan, a Type 1 Diabetes Health Care Plan or an Epilepsy/Seizure Disorder Health Care Plan, as needed. Finally, if your child has any other medical condition please complete a general Health Care Plan. We’d kindly ask that any of these forms be completed and sent in with your child at your earliest convenience, as appropriate.
Please note, these forms must be completed annually for children with an anaphylactic and/or other medical conditions. We thank our community for their help with gathering this important information.
As you are aware, our school has many new health and safety measures in place to help keep students and staff safe from the spread of COVID-19. But everyone, including families, plays a critical role in supporting health and safety in our school community.
What can you do to help at home? Please print out the Return to School Daily Checklist and refer back to it regularly as a reference. Working together, we can increase the effectiveness of our safety measures and mitigate against the spread of COVID-19.
Our thanks for your support.
During these times, it is especially important that students come to school free of any ailments or symptoms. Please refer to the Daily Screening Checklist to ensure that your child is healthy and fit to endure the rigors of being at school. Students exhibiting symptoms will be isolated, assessed and parents will be notified. We kindly ask that parents be prepared to pick up your child if they are exhibiting symptoms. Parents will need to monitor their child at home and delay any return to school (at least 24 hrs) until the child is symptom free. Parents may need to have their child tested to rule out the possibility of COVID. Positive test results need to be shared with the school so that Public Health can administer contact tracing protocols. Our caretaking staff, in all cases, will conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfecting regiment in all areas travelled by the student. Your understanding and cooperation with this practice is essential to the safety of all students and staff.
Bring Your Own Device to school is a practice accepted at Central Park. Even though we exercise strict cleaning protocols when handling devices, students may still feel more comfortable using their own personal devices. Use of all technology is subject to the board's appropriate use policy. Please click on the adjacent image for further information.
Dear Families:
Thank you for your support as we work through COVID-19 school reopening. We recognize that some families are requesting a change in their school program model from face to face learning to virtual school or from virtual school to face to face. On Monday, September 21, we will share a School Model Change request form for families requesting a change.
Only families requesting a school model change will need to complete this form. The form must be completed by Tuesday, September 22 at 7 p.m. to be considered.
We had previously communicated an elementary transition time at the end of October. We have adjusted this to provide the opportunity now and the best continuity of learning for our students throughout the remainder of the term. There will not be another opportunity to change program models before the end of January 2021.
Due to the complexity of the pending reorganization and staffing, your child may be assigned a new teacher.
Staff will continue to work diligently to provide the best program for each child and to comply with the reduced cohort class size targets. Please note, however, that there may be changes prior to September 30, 2020. The number of combined grade classes may increase and the number of students within each class may increase.
You will be informed of any changes to your child’s class placement or program model through the school principal.
We thank you for your support, patience and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Louise Sirisko
Director of Education
At Central Park , we kindly ask that you share your learning model preference with our office. Your shared intentions will support our planning and organizational efforts. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
Via email, the board will be centrally delivering a digital start up package to each family. Please take the time to review the package and complete all forms. These forms provide important information that are essential to our school's operation.
The Dollar Store carries reusable container and lunch bags – great deals!
* Please join in us in supporting this important initiative. We are making a difference one lunch at a time!
