During Exam Days, students are required to be at school only when scheduled to write an exam or to complete work for a culminating activity. More detailed information about exams will be shared in December.
Semester 1 Exams will take place between Thursday, January 26 to Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Please review the dates for your student’s exam schedule.
Thursday January 26: Period 1 Exam/Culminating Activity
Friday January 27th: Period 2 Exam/Culminating Activity

- Students are expected to complete all final assessments at the place, date and time indicated by the teacher and the examination schedule provided by the school.
- Students cannot leave early for vacations, employment or other activities.
- In case of extenuating circumstances (e.g. bereavement, court appearance or when a student is unable to write an exam because of illness explicitly stated on a medical certificate), the principal will decide, in consultation with the subject teacher, the most appropriate method to determine your final standing in the course.
- In case of an unexcused absence, a zero may be assigned for the missed portion of the final assessment.

January 2023
Dear BOSS Families:
Re: Upcoming EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics
On January 19th and January 20th, 2023, our Semester One Grade 9 math students will be taking part in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO’s) Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics. The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate student learning of the knowledge and skills in the Grade 9 mathematics curriculum.
Students will complete the assessment in two sessions (Session A and Session B), and each session will be completed in one sitting. The assessment will automatically adapt to the individual student’s level of proficiency as the student progresses through each session. Students will also be presented with a questionnaire.
After the assessment sessions are complete, teachers will receive individual student results. The results may count toward up to 5% of a student’s final course mark.
For more information about EQAO and to view a sample test, visit EQAO’s website (www.eqao.com).
Sincerely,
Principal
Louis Lim

December 2022
I am happy to serve as your trustee on the 2022-2026 Board of Trustees.
As a trustee, my role includes being an advocate for quality public education in York Region, and I want to assure you that I am committed to that work. Every one of our students deserves to be learning in an environment where they feel safe, valued and supported in learning and achieving success.
Part of our role as trustees includes making policy and budget decisions, and setting our priorities as an organization through a Multi-Year Strategic Plan. Our board will work hard to keep students at the centre of our decision making, and to build collaborative relationships with the families and communities we serve. The education of our students, your children, is a partnership and the relationships we have with families is an essential one.
Communicating with families and members of the public is also an important part of our role, and I look forward to connecting with members of the school community in the coming weeks and months. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I will be sharing information with you throughout the school year, and letting you know more about our work and priorities as a school board. You can also visit the board website at www.yrdsb.ca or follow on social media.
As we head into December, I also want to wish you a safe and enjoyable winter break. There are many significant dates in December for different faiths and cultures, and to all those celebrating, I wish you a happy and joyous celebration. I hope everyone has an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, relax and recharge, and we look forward to welcoming you back in January.

Important Schedule Change for All Students on Thursday, December 1
We will be changing our daily schedule on Thursday, December 1st to accommodate the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). We will be switching periods 3 and 4, so the schedule will be as follows:
Period 1 classes – 8:15-9:35
Period 2 classes – 9:40-10:55
Period 4 classes – 11:00-12:15
Period 3 classes – 12:20-1:35
Period 5 classes – 1:40-2:55
The cafeteria will be closed for the OSSLT, so we kindly ask that grade 9, 11 and 12 students have lunch offsite, if possible. We will have limited space available for lunch on December 1st.
Grade 10 OSSLT Update
Our Grade 10 students will be writing the OSSLT on Thursday, December 1. All students who will be writing should have received a letter on Wednesday. Students who have been deferred until the Spring session would have also received a letter. We will also have an assembly on Friday to share information with students about the OSSLT.
On the morning of December 1, students are to arrive at their designated location by 8:10am to write Session A. They will be writing Session B in the same location at 12:10pm.
To prepare, students may access resources shared on the Literacy Google Classroom. Parents and guardians may access additional information by visiting the EQAO website.
On Thursday, December 1, the cafeteria will not be available during the lunch period. If possible, we ask that grade 9, 11 and 12 students who are not participating in the OSSLT to have their lunch off-site. Also, there will be a schedule change on that day to accommodate for the OSSLT. The schedule for December 1 is:
Period 1 classes – 8:15-9:35

OUAC/OCAS
November 18, 2022 - mid-terms marks uploaded to OUAC and OCAS
November 29, 2022 - Full Disclosure
Between November 18 and November 29, any approved dropped courses will be removed from student timetable, transcript AND OUAC and OCAS by the Guidance Department. While November 29 is the deadline, it is critical that any drop requests take place the week prior to ensure appointments can be taken and all sign-offs are completed properly.
Course Change Requests For Semester Two
Students wishing to request changes to courses for semester two are encouraged to make an appointment with their assigned counsellor over the next few weeks in advance of next semester to discuss possibilities. Many courses are full – however changes are more difficult to make once the new semester begins.
Student Wellness
As we approach winter break and academic pressure increases, please keep in mind your child’s wellness.
Some things to look for include:
Loss of interest in things they normally enjoy
Notable changes in sleeping and eating habits
Withdrawal from friends, family or activities
Changes in academic performance
Wellness Tips:
Model healthy strategies
Exercise and eat healthy
Practice gratitude and mindfulness
Talk to your children about their day. Ask specific questions to gather information
Resources:
Visit the YRDSB mental health page here, visit the ABCs of mental health here and consider resources provided here

Grade 12 Graduation Check-ins
On November 15 & 16 the guidance department will be visiting grade 12 classes to check in with students regarding their graduation status. Parents/guardians should look for a form that will be coming up that needs to be signed and returned to school.
OUAC/OCAS
Grade 12 semester 1 midterm marks will be sent to OUAC (Ontario University Application Centre) and OCAS (Ontario College Application Service) on Friday November 18, 2022.
It is the responsibility of students to check their academic records on OUAC and OCAS and if there is a problem they are to book an appointment with their guidance counsellor.
Full Disclosure
Full Disclosure is the term used to identify when courses will remain as “Withdrawn” on a student’s transcript. This year, Full Disclosure will take place by November 29, 2022. This only impacts grade 11 and 12 courses.
Grade 11 students must continue to maintain four full credits this semester. Removing courses must meet specific criteria and typically only approved by administration in unusual circumstances.
Grade 12 students will have their mid-semester marks submitted to OUAC and OCAS on November 18th. All marks for courses that are active will be uploaded at that time.
Between November 18 and November 29, any approved dropped courses will be removed from their timetable, transcript AND OUAC and OCAS by the Guidance Department. This encourages students to get a fuller sense of their grasp of content and hopefully achieve success in their courses this semester. While November 29 is the entry deadline, it is critical that any drop requests take place the week prior to ensure appointments can be taken and all sign-offs are completed properly.
Please note, grade 11 students and grade 12 students who are not graduating do not have any data shared to outside application centres.
Grade 12 students should consider the following steps when considering a drop request:
*Have student discuss with their teacher a plan to successfully meet their academic goals in the course
*Get the facts from Post-Secondary Institutions to feel comfortable about the weight and significance of their mid-semester marks for this year’s admissions process.
*Speak with their Guidance Counsellor to feel comfortable and build a plan about their goals for this year and get perspective on what may work best for them.

As suggested by the Premier’s Highly Skilled Workforce Expert Panel Report, the program will support students to begin planning their future career path by helping them better understand the world of work. On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, Grade 9 students will have an opportunity to spend the day at a workplace of a parent/guardian, relative, friend or volunteer or choose career activities to explore at home. More information and consent forms will be sent to grade 9 parents in the coming days.

The York Region District School Board regularly engages in reviewing its policies. Currently, the Board of Trustees has identified a need to review Policy #672 Student Leadership and Voice and Policy #635 Student Dress Code. As part of the review process The YRDSB consults extensively with students, staff and community members.
We encourage you to review this slide deck to build some context around Student leadership in our Board and fill out the surveys to provide your feedback. You will find the surveys on our Board's Policy review page along with an explanation of policy review. Scroll down the page and click on to find the links to the surveys.
We thank you for your participation and your voice in ensuring our policies are reflective of our community of learners. Participation in the survey is completely voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. Your input will be considered and used to help inform revisions to the policies.

Principal’s Message
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I am honoured to be the new principal of Bur Oak Secondary School and look forward to working with, supporting, and serving students, staff, and parents/guardians. Key to our partnership is developing trusting relationships and engaging in effective and on-going communication. If you have questions or concerns, (1) most can be addressed by reaching out to your child’s classroom teacher as the first contact; (2) additional supports can be provided by your child’s guidance counsellor and if your child is assigned a Special Education resource teacher; and (3) your child’s alpha vice-principal: Ms. Wonnacott (student last name A to L) or Mr. Melnyk (student last name M to Z). As principal, I believe in solution-focused team approach with decisions made with students at the forefront.
Thank you for choosing Bur Oak Secondary School and for entrusting my highly skilled staff with your child’s education. Our focus is student learning and achievement, and student and staff well-being in a safe and welcoming learning organization. Each member of the school community (students, staff, parents/guardians) has a vital role to support students to reach their potential and to support their social, emotional, and academic needs.
Welcome to Bur Oak Secondary School! My staff and I look forward to serving the school community.
Sincerely,
Louis Lim, Ed.D.
Principal

This optional fee supports the school breakfast program, student groups, Student Council and Event Council activities (i.e. dances, movie night, Bossilicious, Carnival), grade 9 day pizza lunch, student celebrations, athletic transportation, clubs, councils, and guest speakers. The cost to participate in many events and athletic teams will be decreased based on the payment of this student activity fee. The student activity fee also offsets the cost of student printing. All Physical and Health Education students are required to wear Bur Oak’s athletic attire when participating in Physical Education classes. This clothing is intended to be purchased once and used for your entire high school career. Students will receive two T-shirts and one pair of shorts.
