Pathway:
Gap Year
A Gap Year may be a choice for students who need a break to reflect on their next steps, earn income, and/or decide on the direction they wish to take in the next phase of their life. It does not mean students are aimless, but rather that they are gaining new perspective about what their future means to them.
Many potential "gappers" report feeling worn out, “stuck” or unsure of their life path and wish to take some time to explore themselves, their strengths and experience things that put them outside of their “bubble”. This helps to give them a sense of how they can contribute to their local and global community. (https://www.cangap.ca/educators)
Gap years should have a purpose; not just a break from learning.
Actively seek out opportunities for inspiration and direction.
Engage in activities to clarify your understanding of your interests or desired function.
Experience can separate you from “the pack” after postsecondary.
A Gap Year looks different for everyone, but the main similarity is that your Gap Year needs to have PURPOSE. This means you could be:
Learning about life outside of high school.
Exploring your options for postsecondary by developing skills, upgrading your academics, and/or doing more research.
Saving money for your future.
Volunteering at an organization that links with your future.
Trying out a postsecondary course at a college or university.
By taking a GAP YEAR students often feel more dedicated to their future path, as they have taken the time to clarify EXACTLY what they are looking to do. It is also an excellent way to FINANCIALLY prepare
for postsecondary!
