PE
The Junior School Physical Education programme promotes learning through movement. Our broad based curriculum aims for each child to gain an understanding that physical activity is an important aspect in the development of their physical well-being. Students in Physical Education lessons will learn through and about movement in a range of contexts with the purpose of developing a combination of transferable skills promoting physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. The emphasis at this age is on participation in individual, partner and small teams in an enjoyable, safe and non-threatening environment. While competition is utilised as a learning tool, the emphasis of enjoyment and team cooperation in play is stressed rather than winning.
The Physical Education programme in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 has four major objectives:
- To establish positive attitudes in the early years towards a healthy and active lifestyle, so that they may be adopted in later life.
- To develop physical competence and help promote physical development.
- To encourage important aspects of personal and social development by interacting with others and objects.
- To promote the benefits of physical activity through enjoyment in participation.
In order to achieve our objectives, the programme in the Junior School concentrates on equipping the students with the fundamental principles of movement, coordination, spatial awareness and game sense. Grade 2-5 students study nine units of work, which cover all physical domains.
