Transition into Grade 11

The transition from Grade 10 into Grade 11 is a crucial time for students as they prepare for their final two years of High School. In High School students are given greater freedom and responsibility and they are involved in making exciting decisions that will influence the pathways available to them when they leave the College.

All Grade 10 students are supported as they progress to Grade 11 and we look forward to them continuing to meaningfully engage in all elements of our learning programme. The transition process is both open and inclusive and relies upon a partnership between students, parents and the school, in which the best educational interests of the students are of paramount importance.

Following discussions between students and teachers about appropriate (and manageable) choices, students will select the courses and levels they would like to follow in Grade 11. Mentors, teachers, parents, counsellors, peers, Grade 11 and 12 students, the University Advising Centre, the IBDP Coordinator, Head of Grade and Vice Principal, will provide students with support and guidance to make informed choices of courses and levels to follow.

Subject Guidance

Teachers will support the transition process by providing students with guidance as to which level would be most appropriate for your child. This guidance should help spark supportive conversations between teachers and students. The main guidance statements given by teachers are summarised below:

■ Higher : The student has demonstrated that they have the ability to manage the demands of this subject at Higher Level

■ Standard/Higher : The student has demonstrated that they have the ability to manage the demands of this subject at a Standard Level. They may be able to manage the demands at Higher Level but this would require a significant commitment.

■ Standard : The student has demonstrated that they have the ability to manage the demands of this subject at a Standard Level

■ Concern : The student has shown that they would struggle to cope with the demands of this subject at IB level.
