Mathematics

Through a variety of provocations and experiences with various manipulatives, children engage in mathematical thinking that strengthens counting, matching, classifying and patterning skills. Recognising the importance of mathematical reasoning and communication skills, provocations are open-ended, inviting students to form connections as they explore and play with materials. Teachers ask probing questions to support children in articulating their thinking and developing their reasoning further. Many mathematical activities are integrated into Unit of Study, reflecting the connected nature of knowledge and its application in the world.

Some of the materials students may work with over the course of the year to develop mathematical thinking are:

  • Pattern blocks
  • Dice
  • Dot cards showing various quantities
  • Rekenreks or rekenrek charts
  • Wooden blocks

The use of various mathematical manipulatives builds flexibility and depth of understanding around mathematical concepts.
