Tutor Groups

Students at UWCSEA are here to enjoy and benefit from an all round education. This is more than just an academic programme, although that is a central aspect. UWCSEA aims to encourage the development of mature young people, at ease with themselves and others, who have the confidence and the competence to play an active role in society.

We are a large Middle School catering for 770 students and our pastoral team aim to support the overall student experience. Our pastoral structure allows us to create smaller, more personal groupings. Each grade is lead by two Heads of Grade. With the Tutor, they address issues that are unique to the lives of the students and provide support in dealing with difficult issues.

Students are grouped in “Tutor Groups” and remain in this group for most subjects apart from Language and Mathematics (and PE in Grades 7 & 8). In some school systems these class groups are called Homeroom or Form classes. Students will see their tutor every day during tutor time between 9.50 and 10.15am. The tutor’s goal is to develop a connection with each of the students within their tutor group and gain an understanding into their success within each subject, social networks, activities, service participation, and general life within the College.

Tutors are a hub for communication between parents, teachers, Heads of Grade, Counsellors and Learning Support teachers. In short, the Tutor is a key component in the lives of our Middle School students.

The main aims of Tutor Group sessions are to provide community, growth and fun. In other words, Tutor Group time is designed to:

  • Provide a sense of community and belonging
  • Create an environment for students to have fun and interact socially
  • Support the demands of organizing and balancing day to day life
  • Provide a daily point of contact between students and a significant adult in the school
  • Develop Personal, Social & Emotional skills in a safe guided environment
  • Celebrate internationalism, individuals, achievements
