A message from the Head of UWCSEA East Campus on Innovation
The modern world could not be built without innovation. That’s very obvious in technology, where the pace of change is so fast it’s hard to keep up and seems to be accelerating. But it’s also true of our institutions, where we are rightly demanding higher standards of social accountability, and even our values - whereby the boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable are visibly different in so many areas. Furthermore, it’s increasingly obvious that innovation can be a tool for good or for bad, so we need to be thinking about our impact at least as much as our intention.
At UWCSEA, we are therefore very conscious that innovation will not be innovation for innovation’s sake; nor will we ‘move fast and break things’ as has famously been suggested. For us, it means we will innovate to better serve our Mission for Peace and a Sustainable future; we’ll innovate to develop products, services and systems that build communities and connect people. Our approach will be a creative, entrepreneurial one; seeking to understand unmet needs in our communities and find effective solutions.
By its very nature, this work is unpredictable and iterative - it lies outside the usual formal structures that have led to the issues that we’re seeking to address, and that’s where some of the excitement lies. More than in any other areas, students are free to find their own way, follow their interests and solve problems that they identify - and then learn the concepts they need. They may draw from Circular Design, Robotics, Industrial Design, Planet Centric Design, UX Experience, Augmented or Virtual Reality, Social Startups, Sustainable Food, Smart City ideas or eWaste initiatives - and that’s just to start!
We’ve seen unprecedented interest in East Innovation, and we hope these pages give you a glimpse into the opportunities on offer. If you have any innovative suggestions, please let us know!
