A project that is supported by Innovation@EAST
In May, the Grade 5's were given an opportunity to further develop their communication and collaboration skills, thanks to resources provided by Innovation@EAST. Students in 5BPO were the first to take time away from their Exhibition projects to build go-carts and/or scooters as part of a ‘construction challenge’, designed to promote the kinds of 21st-century problem-solving skills that are so valuable for student learning across all areas of the curriculum, especially now as they transition into the Middle School.
Students were provided with specifically designed kits and instructions and were asked to communicate with each other to make decisions about what and how they built their vehicles. The learning experience culminated in a journey around the Plaza, with each member of the team taking their vehicles for a spin!
One student commented, “This was so cool, I really feel like we collaborated well, otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to work out how it all fits together!”
The kits are available for every Grade 5 class to use and there are opportunities for them to revisit and extend their learning by making more mechanically complex vehicles.
Thanks go to Kris Leverton for providing our students with such a fantastic opportunity!
Overview for 2022/2023
These innovation collaboration sessions will continue in the next academic year
An exciting opportunity for students to design, create and race their vehicles will be presented as an after school activity for Primary School - Stay tuned.
