PARENTS FOR SSEP
Robotics Hackathon
2023
Stamford American International School, UWCSEA East, Dover and French International School are coming together in a much anticipated and collaborative Robotics Hackathon where innovation and teamwork take center stage.
FIRST EVENT:
On Saturday the 23rd of September, we held the first event. Students from both Primary and Middle School attended
the competition.
The challenge was to design and build a SumoBot using Lego Spike, EV3 or NXT. The students only had 3 hours to design, build and test the robot, with all students doing exceptionally well. Fun was had for everyone and we would like to thank Stamford American International School for hosting the event.
SECOND EVENT:
The second event, hosted by UWCSEA East on October 7th, centered around students building robots to launch table tennis balls at moving target. Points were awarded to the team with most balls in their box. The event highlighted the students’ innovation and was enjoyed by all.
We are grateful to all the parents for their presence and support!
THIRD EVENT:
On November 4th, we gathered for the third event hosted by SAIS. Anticipation filled the air as participants readied themselves for a day of engineering and teamwork.
The mission: Design, build, and code a delivery truck to transport payloads to a designated zone and return for more. The students enjoyed the hands-on experience of building and coding their delivery trucks. While working together, students exchanged ideas, troubleshooted issues, and refined their designs.
It was a day of thrilling exploration, seamless teamwork, and, above all, a day of exhilarating fun!
FOURTH EVENT:
On December 2nd, 2023, the 4th robotics event took center stage, graciously hosted by UWCSEA Dover. Excitement filled the room as students eagerly awaited the real test for the robots they had meticulously built.
The challenge of the day tasked teams with swiftly sweeping the floor and clearing all objects within the designated black circle within a tight 2-minute window! The team achieving the fastest time wins!
Amidst the challenge, students not only had a blast but also gained valuable knowledge. Collaborating with peers, they discussed strategies to enhance their robots, turning the event into a learning opportunity.
FIFTH EVENT:
The fifth event found a welcoming home at IFS on January 20th, 2024. With tools in hand and minds focused, students eagerly prepared for the robotics challenge of the day. Fostering cross-school collaboration, students come together to form tri-school groups. With 3 robots in play for each team, students are demonstrating their abilities and collaborative prowess.
The mission involves a series of tasks that require precision and teamwork. Each team is tasked with guiding a ball through a relay race. The ball must complete three laps around the track, with each robot taking a turn to complete one lap and pass the ball to its teammate. The team with the best time at the completion of the challenge wins!
Through collaboration, students shared their expertise and dedication to prepare their robots among their team members, understanding that every contribution was integral to their robots' success in the challenge!
FINAL EVENT:
The final hackathon of the term took place on May 25th, graciously hosted by SAIS, with an exciting twist: Parents were invited to participate! With three robots per team, the competition truly tested teamwork and communication. Encouraging collaboration, teams were paired with students from different schools!
The timed challenge required teams to design, build, and code a robot for a tug-o-war competition, meeting specific requirements. Victory was achieved by pulling the opposing team’s robot over the center line, while defeat meant falling off the table.
Despite being the last hackathon of the term, students and parents had a blast! It was amazing to see their collaborative spirit and dedication in building top-notch robots.
Huge thanks to SAIS and a big shoutout to all the students and parents for making this event a success. Looking forward to the next hackathon season!
