The following is a good resource to get started with your research process. You can see a copy of the slides here as well.
Proactively communicate - Students are expected to communicate clearly with their supervisor to organise meetings and meet the deadlines published above. The supervisor will not be chasing you to organise meetings or find time. This can include using Google Calendars and being responsive to emails.
Transparently share your work and process - from the outset of the process students are expected to share a Google Doc. Overtime this will include all of your research notes, sources of information, and your draft extended essay. You can use the Google Docs cite tools, to record your citations with ease. You can use this template.
Choosing a Suitable Topic and Subject - Students must select a topic that genuinely interests them and fits within one of the IB-approved EE subjects, ensuring it allows for sufficient research and analysis.
Formulating a Focused Research Question They are responsible for developing a clear, focused, and researchable question that guides the essay and aligns with the selected subject’s approach and assessment criteria.
Planning and Managing Their Own Time - Students must take initiative in planning their research timeline, meeting deadlines, and making progress independently, while staying in contact with their supervisor.
Conducting Independent Research: They are expected to find and use reliable, relevant sources, collect data where appropriate, and apply critical thinking and analytical skills to develop an argument or investigation.
Engaging with the Reflection Process: Students must participate meaningfully in the three formal reflection sessions (including the viva voce), and complete the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form in ManageBac (RPPF) with honest, thoughtful entries. These can not exceed 500 words.
Upholding Academic Integrity - Students are responsible for ensuring the essay is their own original work, correctly citing all sources, and adhering to IB rules on academic honesty and ethical research, and use of Artificial Intelligence tools. Failure to do so will mean that students will have to restart their EE, or potentially be withdrawn from IB Diploma. As essential part of this is being transparent as sharing your Google Doc from the outset.
