At Suffolk New College we embrace diversity. We are committed to providing an environment that promotes and celebrates equality of opportunity for all.
The college expects all students and staff to treat other members of the college community in a way that enables them to feel safe, accepted and valued. We expect staff and students to work together to overcome all forms of discrimination and harassment.
We are all different. At Suffolk New College we have a rich variety of people form different countries and cultures, different languages and outlooks on life. Some people may have a disability, some may have a different sexual orientation or follow a different religion.
Underneath all the differences we have many things in common. We all want the best for our friends and families and we all hurt if people intimidate us either verbally or physically.
We believe that a varied college population helps to generate a wider range of resources, skills, ideas and energy. In turn this helps the College and the community thrive. We aim to have a more representative and ‘balanced’ student population which will benefit every student. It will create more opportunities within the college for you to progress; make better use of the knowledge and skills from all parts of the community; and help you to have a better understanding of other people in society.
We ask all students to respect all students, staff and visitors to the College, to accept and value the differences between people, and not to show prejudice, bias or discrimination because of these differences.
You will have opportunities to discuss Equality and Diversity in your PD sessions and through your curriculum. Recent events this summer have led to a heightened awareness of related campaigns such as Black Lives Matter, which will also be discussed in your PD sessions. The Student Union will be encouraging you to lead or be part of campaigns that you feel strongly about - more details will follow.
Diversity literally means being different. It is about recognising, understanding and appreciating the differences between people. For example, it means respecting individuals of different races, nationalities, cultures, beliefs, faiths, personalities, mental capacities, genders, ages, social backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientations.
The college has a lot of people from very different backgrounds working or studying here. We are a very diverse community and we believe that the college benefits greatly from being so. Diversity means seeing the people you work and study with as individuals rather than as members of a particular group and valuing the different experiences, abilities and skills each person can bring to the College.
The college expects students to help it be a place where individuality and the differences between people are accepted, respected and celebrated. This will help us all live in a richer, more varied and tolerant environment and culture.
Equality literally means being equal. It is making sure that everyone is treated fairly and everyone has the best possible opportunity to succeed, to be happy and to feel educationally and personally fulfilled. The College through its commitment to equal opportunities aims to ensure that everyone has the same rights as everyone else and that no individual or group receives less favourable treatment because of their differences.
The College expects each student to treat other members of the community in ways that enables them to feel safe, accepted, valued and treated fairly.
