What are Higher Education and Degree Apprenticeships? How are they different from a degree? How do I find one?
What are Higher Education and Degree Apprenticeships?
They are a combination of work and study - and include a work-based, academic or combined qualification or a professional qualification relevant to the industry
The benefit- you gain a Higher Level qualification in addition to developing professional skills and work-based experience
All apprenticeships are genuine jobs - so all apprentices earn a salary. You will be paid at least the national minimum apprenticeship wage (£4.81 per hour)
They are available at levels 4-7 - levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to a Higher Education Certificate (HNC)/ Diploma (HND) or a foundation degree. Level 6 is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s degree. You are likely to enter a HE apprenticeship at either level 4, 5 or 6
They can take - 1 to 5 years to complete, depending on the level of study
How is a Higher Education Apprenticeship different from University?
There are no tuition fees - the government and your apprenticeship provider pays your tuition fees for you- so no university 'debts'
You learn professional skills and gain on the job experience - but simultaneously work towards your qualification. University does not necessarily offer this
To note - students can apply for apprenticeships AND university at the same time
Entry grades - are dependent on the provider of the programme
There is no fixed deadline when applying - vacancies appear throughout the year. But as a general rule, vacancies with larger companies start appearing in the autumn, while the majority pop up from January or February onwards
