Summit High School and the Summit Band Program

Summit High School, in Bend, OR, was opened in 2001. The band program has a history of excellence, representing Summit High School and the surrounding community at local, state, regional, and national festivals and competitions. Notably, the band is a multiple-time OSAA state champion in the 5A division. Summit's Wind Ensemble, the "Summit Winds," currently competes in OSAA at the 6A division and earned a place in the state competition at that level for the first time in 2019.

2020-2021 Summit Bands Classes:

  • Concert Band (2 sections, one specifically tailored to freshmen and students new to band)

  • Wind Ensemble ("Summit Winds")

  • Stage Band

  • Jazz Ensemble

  • Percussion Techniques (offered first semester only)

Outside of class time, the band program supports the school and local community through four primary ensembles, which involve students from all band classes.

Cooper Ottum, Director of Bands

Cooper Ottum has been the director of bands at Summit High School since 2018. Cooper is a native Oregonian from the Hillsboro/Beaverton area, but most recently lived in Ellensburg, WA, where he spent two years as a graduate teaching assistant for the Central Washington University bands. At CWU, Cooper was director of the CWU Basketball Band and interim director of the CWU Symphonic Band. Originally trained in music composition, Cooper also attended University of Southern California and University of Missouri-Kansas City, and had his music performed by various chamber ensembles on the west coast and in the midwest. In his free time, Cooper loves to make coffee, go mountain biking, cook, and travel with his wife Cara Strever.
