ELA Curriculum Information for Progress Reports
Throughout the first half of our year in ELA we covered two units of study; the American Revolution and Stories of Human Rights. Through our exploration of the American Revolution, we continuously asked ourselves the question of “How does a person’s perspective influence their opinion?”. Students read stories and information from both the Patriots and Loyalists perspectives and dug deeper into how one may have found themselves supporting one side over the other. Students synthesized and brought together their knowledge with their ability to conduct simple research to create artifacts and informational pieces to contribute to the museum project. The end goal being students were able to put together the story of the revolution from various perspectives to understand how the events unfolded and why. In our 2nd unit we explored the question of “What are human rights and how can they be threatened?’. In this unit we read and discussed the fictional novel Esperanza Rising and we read about human rights. Students applied this learning around human rights as one lens through which to interpret the characters and themes in the novel. Through close reading, interpretation, and analysis of fiction and nonfiction texts, students begin to build their understanding of human rights. Throughout the unit, students closely read articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) related to events in Esperanza Rising where human rights are threatened. Throughout both units of study discussion, analysis, and reflection were critical elements to our classroom learning. From there, students wrote and shared their thoughts, knowledge and interpretations in a variety of ways including opinion writing, written reflections, informational writing, and group projects and presentations. Development of reading, writing, and speaking happens everyday through our ELA activities.
