Dear Parents and Guardians,
A letter was previously sent home with all 3rd–5th grade students regarding the Sources of Strength curriculum adopted by the Bend-La Pine School District. As part of this program, I will again be teaching Sources of Strength lessons in 3rd–5th grade classrooms this year. School counselors are providing a series of four lessons designed to help students build resilience, develop healthy coping skills, and learn how to seek help for themselves or support a friend who may be struggling.
I would like to make you aware that one lesson in the 4th and 5th grade series addresses the topic of suicide in a careful and age-appropriate way, focusing on how to recognize warning signs and seek support if a student or their friend is experiencing these feelings. This lesson will be presented in the coming weeks, and we want to ensure that families feel informed and prepared for any conversations that may arise at home.
We understand that this topic can be sensitive. Additional mental health support will be available during and after the lesson. The school psychologist and I will be present to support students and respond to any concerns.
Please feel free to reach out to me or your child’s teacher if you have any questions or would like more information.
Thank you for your partnership and support.
Sincerely,
Ms. Parker (School Counselor)
