Lesson Ideas

Read A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle

Discuss how it can be hard to move up to a new grade or school.

Make a video for teachers where students tell what they've learned this year in one sentence. Teachers will enjoy hearing what their kids have to say. Use Clips or iMovie and share via Google Drive. Here's an example

Books: Rocket to the Moon (Sora), Starstruck (Sora), Daring Dozen (Sora)

Read 1 or 2 stories on rockets or astronauts. Check out these videos.

Books: Why rabbits eat poop and other gross facts about pets (Public library), Rabbits, rabbits & more rabbits!

Cute Rabbit Videos

Braille & Keller

Books: Six Dots (in Sora), Who was Louis Braille (in Sora), The Black Book of Colors (public library), Who was Helen Keller (Sora), Helen Keller and the Big Storm

Ask students if they know what all the dots on the board are used for. They usually know it's braille. Show them the Louis Braille book and talk about the accident that caused his blindness. Talk about how braille is written, using 6 circles for each letter and challenge them to figure out what is written on the board. Pass around The Black Book of Colors so they can feel braille and the raised images on that page.

Next, tell them about Helen Keller and the illness that caused her blind/deafness. Talk about how challenging it would be to communicate without seeing/hearing/speaking and how Annie Sullivan communicated by pressing her fingers into Helen's palm. Finish by reading them Helen Keller and the Big Storm or a different Helen Keller book.
