Our Gallery 110 Instagram profile is www.instagram.com/gallery110seattle; our Facebook page is www.facebook.com/gallery110seattle.
You can post on our Instagram profile by logging into our account. Posts to our Facebook page are done from your own Facebook login and require permission from a page admin. At some point we would like to be able to cross post between the accounts.
Contact the director for more information on gaining access to either of these accounts. You may be asked to create posts during the months when you have an exhibition. For consistency, only one or two gallery members manage our social media presence.
Noah McLaurine has put together the following guide for Instagram content. If you would like to create a similar guide for Facebook posts or have questions about this page, email MayleeNoah@gallery110.com
Gallery 110 Instagram Guide
Posts: Posts are static images or video that appear permanently on your profile page. When posting, keep in mind the relation of your post the previous and future posts: do they go together. If you will be posting a series of related images, do not break them up with unrelated images. Clean, colorful imagery works best. A good basic guide is 3-6 images of artwork, interspersed with 3-6 images of the physical space.
Images should (as closely as possible) fit the aspect ratio of Instagram, vertical 4:5. Occasionally this will involve cropping the image, in general this is preferable to bars at the top or bottom. You can post multiple images per post (users swipe left to see additional images). Images should be as clean and minimal as possible. Think bright white, straight lines, not overwhelming.
Videos should only be used you want to show something moving, for example, moving through the gallery. Informal, dynamic, [DH1] or interviews work best as stories (see below).
Make sure to tag any artists associated with the post. When crafting the post, you can add tags for any related artists. In addition, mention them in the text @artist Instagram handle
Text should be concise and simple. If writing about one of our artists, make sure to get text directly from them! The gallery’s representation of its artists should be determined by the artist themselves.
You can not make a text URL an active hyperlink/link in a post. The only link that is active is in our profile setting.

Stories: Stories are dynamic content that last for 24 hours in the round circle of the user’s image. When a story is available, the image will have a purple circle. Users can pin stories to their page, giving them a permanent home. Categories work well for pinned stories, e.g., “Artists”, “Group Exhibitions”, “Solo Exhibitions”. Moving images and videos work best as stories. Stories are limited to one minute. If you post videos longer than one minute, Instagram will break them up into multiple stories. You can post roughly 100 stories per day.
To create a story: Click the ‘+’ icon from your page, choose ‘story. You can either upload an image, a video, or create new content.
When putting together a story, make sure to make it as dynamic as possible. The content does not have to be as polished as with a post. Interviews, speaking directly into the camera, casual gallery walk-throughs work best here.
You can add text titles, things you want to communicate, etc.). Groups of images work well. If we are having a group show, you can post one image from each artist (make sure to mention the artist), if there are 10 artists, that is 10 stories you made.
Stickers can be added to each image or video. The most important ones are: -location (gallery110), and mentions (@artists Instagram handle).
Any mentions from other users can be posted to stories. For example, if I go to gallery 110, and post a story of me walking through the gallery under my personal Instagram, if I put a sticker with @gallery110 on it, gallery 110 will get a DM (direct message). When you open the DM, Instagram will ask you if you want to add it to gallery 110’s story (always do this, it is great exposure).
Any post gallery 110 makes should also be shared as a story. To do this, click the paper airplane icon under the image, then click your own icon (add post to story). Feel free to add a jaunty gif or sticker to enliven and draw attention to it.
General Tips:
Interact with Instagram as much as possible when in control of gallery 110’s profile. Find new and interesting artists to follow, like other artists and galleries. Comment on artwork that you like. Watch stories (just let it run, even if you don’t really feel like paying attention).
If someone comments on the post, like their comment and respond (this counts toward comment counts) positively.
