REU Site ASL-English Bilingual CENTRE
APPLICATION INFORMATION
APPLICATION INFORMATION
The new ASL-English Bilingual CENTRE will be hosted from May 19* to July 11th.
AIM:
Provide undergraduate students (including high school seniors entering college) with research training in cognitive neuroimaging methods (theoretical and practical) with hands-on research work in a cognitive neuroscience lab, individualized mentoring, and an enduring network, all within a fully accessible ASL-English bilingual environment.
Students will also learn about the neuroethical challenges related to neuroimaging research as it pertains to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing population. The final goal is acquiring research experience to enhance the likelihood of succeeding in STEM fields and entering advanced graduate studies.
WHAT:
Eight (8) weeks of fully funded research activities and training in EEG, fNIRS, fMRI, psychophysiology, and neuroethics. Attend hands-on workshops on each method and discuss the research with PIs and graduate students. Join one of the PEN research labs and contribute to ongoing research in one of the research methods and ongoing projects.
Travel, lodging (campus dorms), food ($375/week), and a stipend ($700/week) will be provided to 7 undergraduate students (from rising sophomores to seniors who will graduate after spring 2025).
WHO:
Students who want to pursue advanced studies in any field related to cognitive and educational neuroscience, but have few opportunities to acquire research training at their institution. Students should explain the barriers they face in acquiring research experiences--e.g., lack of research activity at their institution or limited accessibility and support (see application process below). Students must be US citizens or legal residents (aka green card holders) of the United States of America. Applicants must be 18 years old by the start of the REU.
Good academic standing and a solid GPA (via informal transcripts) are required.
American Sign Language knowledge is desirable, but accessibility support will be provided to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students who don’t know sign language.
WHEN:
Summer 2025, arrival at Gallaudet University on Sunday, May 18th*, for 8 weeks. Departure Saturday, July 11th. Attendance for the entire 8 weeks is required to participate in the Summer School.
*For students requiring a different start date due to a different end date to their spring semester, please see the application materials or the FAQ to request a later start.
