Hi everyone! I hope your semester is going well so far! My name is Rachel Bass, pronouns are she/her/hers. Now, a self-description: A white woman with curly brown hair wearing a mix of green and blue rimmed glasses with black spots, then I have a blue colored polo shirt with a Gallaudet logo, sitting on a brown chair in front of a blue solid-colored wall. I am a DeafBlind Student Success Coach at Gallaudet University. My role is to provide support to the DeafBlind students in navigating through their academic journey and experiences at Gallaudet. To ensure student success the CoNavigator (CN) program, previously known as SSP (Support Service Provider) for DeafBlind students was established.
CoNavigators work with DeafBlind students to provide access to campus as a human guide. Other key roles include:
- being responsible for relaying visual and environmental information
-providing access to printed materials to the DeafBlind individuals.
This job will include close contact with certain students including those who are DeafBlind on campus and in certain situations, off campus for academic-related functions.
The role and responsibility of a CoNavigator is to:
- empower the DeafBlind students to be independent and make their own decisions.
-assists by allowing the DeafBlind student to integrate into the Gallaudet community with guidance
-facilitating communication support using the DeafBlind person’s preferred language and communication mode reducing communication barriers.
We are looking for those who are current students (remote/off-site) that are interested in working as an CN. As a CN , you would be contributing around 10-20 hours a week at $15/hour as a part of a larger effort to create a more accessible and inclusive experience including support for our DeafBlind students. This would be an enriching experience and a great opportunity for you to learn and become involved with the community!
Training will be required along with complying with current Gallaudet health and safety protocols. This training will be a 2-day training session that will be a total of 4 hours (2 hours each day). This will prepare you for your role as a CN. You will be paid for the training as a part of your work.
If you are interested in applying to become an CN or want more information, please feel free to refer to the flier. If you have additional questions, please contact Jennifer Tuell at Jennifer.Tuell@gallaudet.edu. We look forward to connecting with you soon! Thank you!
