Letters to Juliet review

Plot

Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is an aspiring young woman that lives in New York. She yearns to be a writer and finds the perfect occasion on her pre-honeymoon in Italy. One day, while visiting Verona with her fiancee (Gael García Bernal), she discovers an unanswered 50 year old "letter to Juliet" - one of thousands of missives left by people with troubled hearts at the courtyard of the famous character from Shakespeare's tragedy. These letters are taken care by the "secretaries of Juliet", a group of women that answer the missives each day, hoping to make a difference in someone's life. Being a true romantic, Sophie becomes a secretary of Juliet herself to help Claire (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly British woman, find her first love. Backed up by Charlie (Christopher Egan), Claire's grouchy grandson, the trio goes on a quest among the breathtaking rural areas of Italy to save a lost love and to help a troubled one.

Reviews

Welcome back to the review section of our site, guys!

Today we decided to talk about a movie that, believe it or not, was set in Verona. Yes guys you understood it correctly. In addition, the plot is very different from the usual tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare, you expect, so don't worry. The story the movie is about is well written and directed and a shout-out goes to starring actors Amanda Seyfried and Gael Garcia. So far nothing wrong, the cast and locations are on point.

The only thing I didn't really appreciate is how easily and without any effort things happen to the main character, the modern Juliet (Amanda), like if she was living in a fairytale. But, obviously, that’s a romantic comedy and therefore it's supposed to be like that otherwise you wouldn’t have your sugary movie.

In conclusion, I'd recommend "Letters to Juliet" for a girls’ night movie and …. enjoy your sleepover 😜

We're back with another review for you!
Since summer keeps getting closer and closer, we chose a movie that will probably give you the vibe of a nice and typical Italian holiday. That's in fact one of the main reasons I enjoyed "Letters to Juliet" a lot: the setting and the images of the film always fulfil my longing for summer. Furthermore the story is really light, so you can watch it whenever and wherever you prefer and it's pretty easy to follow along. The only small detail that bothered me was that Verona's historical sites were a bit overlooked, when they could've been the perfect set for many of the scenes.
No matter my true Veronese critical side, this movie is one of my top recommendations, given its light plot and beautiful settings. Letters to Juliet is the typical romantic comedy anyone could enjoy, so I hope you'll take it into consideration for your next movie night.

PS: the soundtrack is one of Taylor Swift's songs, so I 100% would recommend it to the Swifties like me ;)

Awards

This movie was nominated for 6 awards, but unfortunately it ended up with 0 prizes.

Vanessa Redgrave, playing Claire Smith-Wyman, got 2 nominations, one for the "Movies for Grownups Award" and the second one for the "Satellite Award". Amanda Seyfried also was nominated for the "Teen Choice Award" in the category "romantic comedy" but like her colleague, didn't win anything.
