Oakley Carico - GMS Football
Oakley is an 8th grader at GMS and currently a member of the GMS Football Team. The Middle School Football team traveled to Fort Chiswell this week and came up just short on a heartbreaking ending, but Oakley and his teammates still gave their best efforts, stacking up 34 points. Oakley has progressed rapidly this year on both sides of the ball, but he is especially excelled on offense. Whether it's going out for a pass, throwing a lead block, or running the ball himself, Oakley has embraced his role as a versatile back. He came up with several big time runs and a couple touchdowns this week in an offensive battle where the teams combined for 80 points. Oakley and his 8th grade teammates have all learned to become versatile this year, as they have all faced trials that led to position changes, playing on both sides of the ball, and playing for both the middle school and JV teams. This group of young men have definitely had everything thrown at them this year, and they are going to be more prepared for the future than most teams, because of pushing through those things now together.
Naomi Anders - GMS Volleyball
Naomi is a 6th grader at GMS and currently a member of the GMS Volleyball Team. She is also the first 6th grader this year to be selected as our Athlete of the Week. MS Volleyball had two tough games this week vs Radford and at Auburn, both of which were Dig Pink nights. The GMS Volleyball team is on fire, and they kept it going against Radford on Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-4, 2-0 win! Naomi played a big part in that, and has worked so hard this year as a 6th grader, making herself available whenever and wherever needed. It doesn't matter if she's off the court or on the court, she is always trying to find a way to contribute and make an impact. Her coach said, "She has worked so much this year for a 6th grader and is always ready to go in the game. She always cheers on her teammates, but has also worked hard in the middle and has shown great improvement in hitting, passing, and serving." Naomi, like the rest of her teammates, have fallen in love with the sport and willing to outwork everyone to try and get the "W."

Game Schedules
Making Waves
MS Football battled in a tough offensively filled game that came down to the last drive of the night. They came up short at Fort on Monday 34-36, but it wasn't from lack of effort. They will head just a few minutes down 58 to Grayson this week. That will be a short trip for everyone if you want to come show some support!
MS Volleyball had another pair of games this week against some challenging opponents. The Bobcats from Radford came to town on Tuesday for the dig pink came, but they made an early exit with set scores of 25-15 and 25-4. The team tried to carry tht momentum to Auburn on Wednesday but came up short. They are looking to get back to their winning ways next week, as they take on Bland and Fort.
MS Golf wrapped up their season with an opportunity to play at Blacksburg Country Club. They did not come out with the storybook ending they hoped for, however, they need to reflect on the success they had this season and hold their heads high. For the first time in several years, we fielded a full team, saw a lot of growth, and had a few of the top golfers at most matches. This team definitely has a lot of potential moving forward.
MS XC had the week off from meets, but that didn't stop them from working. We saw them on the trail, the school, and on the streets of Galax in the sun and the rain this week. They will travel to Bristol this week for their last regular meet of the season before the district championship.
MS Cheer traveled to Fort Chiswell this week and kept everyone's spirits up in a heartbreaking loss. They have the task this week of bringing the noise and the energy in a hostile environment at Grayson.
MS Swim dives into their season this week, with their first meet in Bristol on Tuesday!
Lifeguards
Teachers and Staff - a sheet has been shared with you that includes the names of students who are playing fall sports, their grade level, their coach, and their coach's contact info. If you feel contacting a coach about a student-athlete's behavior or performance in the classroom is necessary, please don't hesitate to do so. There has also been a gate duty sign-up sheet shared with you for the school year. If you work 4 gates, you earn a family pass or CYOW. If you work 8 gates, you get both!
Coaches - Please submit summaries and pictures of teams and/or individuals to georgeedmondson@galaxschools.us so that we can recognize those accomplishments. Please continue to not allow any student athletes to participate in games/meets/matches until they turn in their signed handbook page. In addition, please do not allow them to participate in any activity (practice or play) until you have a copy of their current VHSL physical.
Parents - Please return the signed athletic handbook form as soon as possible so we can get these student athletes on the court/field with their teams to wash out the competition. Please let us know if your student-athlete has participated and/or excelled in any athletics outside of school that we can recognize.
