The Current
Athletes of the Week
Easton Hodges - JV/MS Football
Easton is in the 8th grade and currently a member of the MS and JV Football teams. This week in the MS Football game, we were down 0-12 at half to Carroll. Starting the 2nd half, Easton "had a big run that setup the first touchdown by teammate Joseph. Clay got into the backfield on defense. The ball popped up. Got it. Ran it back for 6. Next time on offense I ran another ball in for a touchdown. I think it gave us a lot of momentum, and it helped us win the game." He was asked how are you able to perform like that and he said, "it's just knowing what to do, and then going out there and doing it." He contributes knowing what to do to "practice, coaches showing him what to do, and his dad teaching him at a young age." He said when you find yourself out of position or don't know what to do, "you just gotta go do something the best you can at 100 miles per hour." He's excited to get Chevy and Mason back and get back to practice, and is hopeful about the rest of the season.
Rylee Hawks - JV Volleyball
Rylee is in the 8th grade and currently a member of the JV Volleyball team. Rylee had three games this week. The first game vs Graham she said, "we started out slow, but we came back, played good, and won." The second game of the week was against George Wythe, and they "started off doing really well, kind of fell off the second set, but toughed it out to get the win." The last game of the week started the same as the second but they came up short after a long week. Rylee said she can't do it without her teammates though and said her "and Mady have always played really well together, no matter what sport we are playing. She knows when I'm with her that I want it, and I know she is going to give me a good set." When asked about the rest of the season, she said, "I think we can do really well, we just have to push through and play really hard and bring our best every single night."
Making Waves
MS Football had an exciting comeback WIN over Carroll last Monday. Easton toted the rock well, gaining some big yards for the Tide. Mason was all over the field and played through several injuries to help the Tide secure the win. Joseph and Brody made some exciting plays on offense and kick return that led to some momentum shifting plays after being down 0-12 at half. Stetson came up with some big tackles that left the Cavaliers scared to be on the field. The most exciting play of the game came from kicker Dominc, who picked up a bad snap and threw it to Clay in the end zone for a successful two-point conversiion. They ended up coming away with the win, 24-12.
Volleyball had a great week. They put together some awesome team rallies and remain undefeated, even after facing some historically great teams. These next couple of weeks will be challenging for them, as they will have back to back to back matches!
Golf traveled to Pulaski this week and put up a valiant effort. We are still looking for two more golfers to make a full team if you know anyone that is interested.
Cheer brought the energy Monday night and rallied the boys to a come back win over Carroll.
Cross Country ran in Dobson and had 4 runners in the top ten. We had double that in the top 20. Cross Country has made huge improvements this year, and they need it because they will be challneged this week, as they have two meets in one week.
Lifeguards
Teachers and Staff - a sheet has been shared with you that includes the names of students who are playing fall sports, their grade level, their coach, and their coach's contact info. If you feel contacting a coach about a student-athlete's behavior or performance in the classroom is necessary, please don't hesitate to do so. There has also been a gate duty sign-up sheet shared with you for the school year. If you work 4 gates, you earn a family pass or CYOW. If you work 8 gates, you get both!
Coaches - Please submit summaries and pictures of teams and/or individuals to georgeedmondson@galaxschools.us so that we can recognize those accomplishments. Please continue to not allow any student athletes to participate in games/meets/matches until they turn in their signed handbook page. In addition, please do not allow them to participate in any activity (practice or play) until you have a copy of their current VHSL physical.
Parents - please return the signed athletic handbook form as soon as possible so we can get these student athletes on the court/field with their teams to wash out the competition.
