Athletes of the Week
Mason Newman - JV/MS Football
Mason Newman is in the 8th grade and part of both the JV and MS Football teams. He had an impressive two-way performance in the first MS game of the season vs Grayson, earning him the GMS Male Athlete Of The Week. At QB, he led the team to the end zone the first drive of the game. He said offense was very clean, and credited everyone for "not turning over the ball." At the MLB position, Mason was also a force on defense with double digit solo tackles. He said they all worked together to "hold them back and even have them get negative yards." It was the heavy hits on both offense and defense that helped the team capitalize for a 20-8 victory! He also said that everyone is playing together, and he "thinks they have a chance to win a bunch more games, if not all."
Haley Bond - MS Volleyball
Haley Bond is in the 7th grade and currently a member of the MS Volleyball team. Her team's very first game of the season was this week vs Auburn. As a program that has won 8 state championships, this first matchup was not as easy task. Behind Haley, who is their setter, the team "rallied to win the first set. They were close in set two, but Auburn would take it and they had to face off in a third set." Haley was all over the court the entire night. Her net play was amazing and she "kept jumping up and hitting the ball everywhere to open spots." That was the trend the entire night, as Haley came up with a big play to end the match and secure the win! Not only did they get a win in their first game and against Auburn, but Haley said this one was pretty sweet because the head coach from Auburn is her aunt.
Making Waves
MS Football started their regular season at Grayson last Monday and came home with a big WIN! Come check them out again in their home opener tonight vs Graham.
JV Volleyball got a WIN in their first match of the year at East Mont. 8th grader Rylee Hawks had a big game at the net. They also traveled to Graham, where 8th graders Mady and Alexis both brought major contributions. They wrapped up their week vs Auburn. They came up just short but showed so much potential. The MS team joined in on Thursday, taking down Auburn in their home opener. Led by Haley's setting, Laynie and Claire both had great all around games. Allie was making perfect passes and serving up rockets. Emmy had a few good kills down the stretch, and Mylee and Lillie helped finish them off.
Golf hosted their first match at Blue Ridge Country Club last Wednesday. Up against Carroll, Auburn, and Christiansburg. They will head out to Auburn Thursday to face some of the same tough opponents once more.
Cheer got the crowd on their feet and behind the football team in the big win at Grayson. Join them tonight to help cheer on the team at home vs Graham.
Cross Country ran in Blacksburg over the weekend. Timmy Jordan was our top male runner, and Myah Parks was our top female runner, coming in 13th overall out of nearly 100 runners.
Lifeguards
Teachers and Staff - a sheet has been shared with you that includes the names of students who are playing fall sports, their grade level, their coach, and their coach's contact info. If you feel contacting a coach about a student-athlete's behavior or performance in the classroom is necessary, please don't hesitate to do so. There has also been a gate duty sign-up sheet shared with you for the school year. If you work 4 gates, you earn a family pass or CYOW. If you work 8 gates, you get both!
Coaches - Please submit summaries and pictures of teams and/or individuals to georgeedmondson@galaxschools.us so that we can recognize those accomplishments. Please continue to not allow any student athletes to participate in games/meets/matches until they turn in their signed handbook page. In addition, please do not allow them to participate in any activity (practice or play) until you have a copy of their current VHSL physical.
Parents - please return the signed athletic handbook form as soon as possible so we can get these student athletes on the court/field with their teams to wash out the competition.
