Athletes of the Week
Our very first athletes of the week were crowned!
Joseph Kohl - JV/MS Football
Joseph "Jo-Jo" Kohl is in the 8th grade and part of both the JV and Middle School football teams. He had an impressive defensive performance in both scrimmages that earned him the GMS Male Athlete Of The Week. When asked about it, he said "I can think of a bunch of my teammates that deserve this more than I do. I think everyone on the team did just as well as I did. I think I had a good game that day, but I think we had a lot of good individual plays, and we played pretty good as a team." Joseph spent some time in a cast the last two years. When asked about how he went from that to playing so well he said, "I just don't quit. I'm not trying to be better than anyone else, just better than I was before, and I work my butt off because I love to play. I just love football. I go home and play with brothers, I get in the weight room, and I play here." The Kohl family is also a big part of the Galax family. I know both the ones that are here and the ones that aren't any longer are proud of you, your work ethic, and who you are as a person.
Mady Goad - JV Volleyball
Mady Goad is in the 8th grade and currently a member of the JV Volleyball team. She rallied in the match against Rural Retreat last week to score 8 service points in a row, securing the lead and getting the win in a tight match. Mady is quite an athlete, and this is her first chance to get some action at the JV level in any sport. When asked about the difference between middle school and JV she said, "We just have to work together more as a team. The competition is better, the teams are better, so we work harder to be better individually, but you also have to work harder to play as a team." Mady just came to Galax last year but instantly became a leader. She is setting this year, and I asked her, "Why do people follow you?" She responded, "For me, I just try to lead by example. People follow you when you work hard and it shows on the court. I also try to do it in the right way. I think sportsmanship and just letting your teammates know you care about them makes the biggest difference." I asked her how it felt to win that first JV match for her team. She said, "It just felt good, it felt really good to have the support from all my teammates."
Making Waves
The MS Football scrimmage revealed that our boys are much improved from last year, essentially putting up a tie against Rural Retreat and a win against Fort Chiswell. The line, led, by Landon, did enough for Mason and Brody both to be successful at the QB position. Easton and Stetson contributed to the game on both sides of the ball. Byram and Joseph were both super tough on defense and Clay had great contain to keep everything inside. Joseph was named the athlete of the week for his solo tackling performance, along with his toughness and resilience that serves as a great example for others.
JV Volleyball got a WIN in their second scrimmage of the year at Rural Retreat and are now ready to get kick off the regular season. 8th graders Mady, Rylee, and Alexis are making an impact for JV. The MS team will join them and both teams will play Auburn Thursday for their home opener.
Golf will host their first match at Blue Ridge on August 28th. They will take on Carroll, Grayson, Auburn, and Christiansburg. Golf still has 3 members and is looking for 2 or 3 to join!
Cheer is ready to take their tidal wave of spirit to Grayson County. Help them wash out the voices of the devils tonight!
Cross Country has been getting runs in before most of us wake up and will stick with that pattern Saturday, as they go to Blacksburg to race at 8:20AM.
Lifeguards
Teachers and Staff - a sheet has been shared with you that includes the names of students who are playing fall sports, their grade level, their coach, and their coach's contact info. If you feel contacting a coach about a student-athlete's behavior or performance in the classroom is necessary, please don't hesitate to do so. There has also been a gate duty sign-up sheet shared with you for the school year. If you work 4 gates, you earn a family pass or CYOW. If you work 8 gates, you get both!
Coaches - Please submit summaries and pictures of teams and/or individuals to georgeedmondson@galaxschools.us so that we can recognize those accomplishments. Please continue to not allow any student athletes to participate in games/meets/matches until they turn in their signed handbook page. In addition, please do not allow them to participate in any activity (practice or play) until you have a copy of their current VHSL physical.
Parents - please return the signed athletic handbook form as soon as possible so we can get these student athletes on the court/field with their teams to wash out the competition.
