Athletes of the Week
11/29
This was a week for the ages for GMS Athletics! It was a short week, but it was a week filled with action and success! We are so thankful for all of our athletic activities and all of the success they had this week, so we are recognizing a top performing athlete from each activity.
Stetson Leonard - MS Boys Basketball
Stetson is an 8th grader on the MS Boys Basketball team. He brings effort and toughness every night. This week was no different. He helped his team pick up a win over Bland with numerous steals, rebounds, and 10 points. He, along with his teammates had to really bring the toughness in a revenge WIN over Fort on Tuesday.
Laynie Lundy - MS Girls Basketball
Laynie is a 7th grader on the MS Girls Basketball team. Laynie helped lead the charge against Bland in a big win by picking up some big rebounds and putting up 10 points. She was part of a total team effort with another WIN the next day over Fort, making them 14-0 on the season.
Aaliyah Robinson - MS Cheer
Aaliyah is a 8th grader on the MS Cheer squad. She is a captain, and it is evident she leads by example. No music malfunction, crowd heckling, or challenging moves rattle her, as she brings the energy every night with a big smile on her face no matter what.
Ben Sheets - MS Swim
Ben is a 8th grader on the MS Swim team. He helped lead the boys and the combined teams to 1st place finishes in their championship meet. He won two solo events and was a part of a first place relay team.
Syrena Chavez - MS Swim
Syrena is a 7th grader on the MS Swim team. She helped lead the girls and the combined teams to 1st place finishes in their championship meet. She had a 1st and a 2nd place finish on individual events and was a part of two 1st place relay teams.
Clay Edwards - MS Wrestling
Clay is a 7th grader on the MS Wrestling team. He is making a very impressive run in his first year of wrestling. He has been dominating the mat all season, just like this week at Carroll where his opponent was pinned before the end of the 1st period.

Making Waves
MS Basketball went up against Bland and Fort Chiswell this week. The girls picked up two more wins by a good margin, giving experience to most of the players. The girls are now 14-0 on the season. The boys didn't disappoint either, going for back to back wins on the week. They were able to dismantle Bland by using great teamwork, and they got a revenge win against Fort by really showing some toughness and grit we haven't seen yet from them. They are looking to carry that momentum with them as the approach the final weeks of the season after Thanksgiving break!
MS Swim had their region championship meet in Bristol, and after being postponed last week due to weather, they were more than ready to get in the pool. The boys got first place, the girls got first place, and the combined team won the championship! There were so many individual and relay victories for the Tide that it would have to be its own book if it were typed out. That wrapped up their season, and they are already excited for next year!
MS Wrestling went to Carroll for a dual. Clay and Leo demolished there opponents and Jorge got a win after a tough match. Overall, the team got another win! They will travel back to Carroll one more time, and then they will wrap up their season with a HOME quad that has been added to the schedule on December 12th!
Our cheer girls are multi-talented, and several had events that pulled them away from games. Did it look any different? No! They are always prepared. They kept the energy going and the crowd into the game, especially in the heated battle against Fort Chiswell!
Lifeguards
Teachers and Staff - a sheet has been shared with you that includes the names of students who are playing fall sports, their grade level, their coach, and their coach's contact info. If you feel contacting a coach about a student-athlete's behavior or performance in the classroom is necessary, please don't hesitate to do so. There has also been a gate duty sign-up sheet shared with you for the school year. If you work 4 gates, you earn a family pass or CYOW. If you work 8 gates, you get both!
Coaches - Please submit summaries and pictures of teams and/or individuals to georgeedmondson@galaxschools.us so that we can recognize those accomplishments. Please continue to not allow any student athletes to participate in games/meets/matches until they turn in their signed handbook page. In addition, please do not allow them to participate in any activity (practice or play) until you have a copy of their current VHSL physical.
Parents - please return the signed athletic handbook form as soon as possible so we can get these student athletes on the court/field with their teams to wash out the competition.
