7th Grade Literature Information
Reading strategies, critical thinking skills, and vocabulary building comprise the main elements of reading instructions. Through fiction, nonfiction, and poetry reading, students will practice reading strategies and comprehension skills.
Reading Instruction will focus on:
· Short stories, nonfiction, drama, poetry, novels, and narratives. The focus will be on pulling evidence from several sources for answers to questions.
· Reading comprehension and critical thinking strategies, elements of literature, poetic elements, text features, summarizing, analysis, character development, etc.
Day-to-Day
o When working from the Literature book, students will be required to complete a graphic organizer for vocabulary words associated with a given selection. Each selection will focus on a different reading strategy and literary analysis. Classwork/homework will be given with each selection and a quiz will be given to assess story comprehension, strategies, analysis, and vocabulary.
o When reading novels, the same will apply as above, however, we will be incorporating vocabulary development, reading strategies, and literary analyses throughout the novel. Comprehension packets and quizzes will be given throughout the novel and students will complete a novel test when a novel has been completed.
o Students are required to always be reading a book and will be using Accelerated Reader (AR) in which they will have to acquire a certain number of points each quarter.
**Classwork/Homework points will be given upon completion of an assignment. Students will lose points when work missing, incomplete, or lacks complete sentences and proper grammar mechanics when needed. If a student is absent or misses a class for band, etc., they are required to ask for and complete any work that was missed.
