Issue # 13 - March 24, 2023
Ramadan Kareem!
Middle School is excited to support all of our students during this month of Ramadan. Our shorter days have been scheduled so students still get time with all of their teachers and also have built-in breaks for times of rest and to visit the bathrooms and their friends. New learning will still be happening in all classrooms, so students have the ability to continue on with their progress. We have indoor spaces for both our fasting and non-fasting students and on long breaks students may also go to the cafeteria, and go outdoors if they want some fresh air and activity. During this time the Prayer Room is also available to all students and staff. It is always a wonderful experience for our students to learn more about one another and the month of Ramadan is a great example of this!
GAA has been lucky to have such an amazing Arts Department and there has been an Elementary and a High School Theater production already that really got the students inspired. This week we had the Middle School Theater Production of The Little Mermaid Jr. The Arts department did not disappoint. The set and costumes were amazing and it was clear the students and staff put in hours of their time and work to support our Middle School students. The students were a success on the stage in their acting and their singing, and made us truly feel like we were ‘Under the Sea’ for the evening. I hope that everyone enjoyed the amazing production and were able to see these young stars and artists in the making. Congratulations to the Arts Department, supporting staff, and talented students on working so hard for this amazing show. Additionally, the parent support was phenomenal. We appreciate GAAPA and other parents for supporting the production from day one. Thank you all for what you brought!
Course selection time is upon us. In middle school the course selection form has already been sent out and completed. Upon return from Spring Break, students will be able to move on to the next step. Grade 6 and Grade 7 will have time within their advisories to meet one on one with their advisors to input their course requests for next year. This one on one time is vital since the advisors can help ensure the student is choosing the correct class and also matching the Google Forms that the parents and students completed together. Grade 8, moving on to high school next year, will have time in the auditorium with the high school counselors and administrators to complete theirs with direct guidance. From there, this will allow the school to begin the process of preparing for next school year. Counselors, administrators and our PowerSchool Coordinators will be working on this through the end of the school year for students to get their schedule closer to the 2023-2024 school year start.
Enjoy the Spring Break! Students have been very dedicated and working hard in their classes. Teachers have been prioritizing grading and feedback to ensure the progress reports are ready to share out with families. Parents have been communicating and supporting all of their children. Everyone deserves a holiday and time to celebrate with family. Enjoy your time together!
Dear GAA scholars and families,
Ramadan Kareem to those of you observing the holy month of Ramadan and Happy Spring Break to you all!
Please see below links for the End of Course Assessment Schedule for this year. This has been split into two documents:
In Advisory, we will work with students to develop best practices for success and create a schedule so that they are organized and understand their assessment schedule. Hopefully, this will help them submit any projects due and be prepared for any paper assessments. As always, students can reach out to their Advisors and/or Heads of Grade for additional guidance.
The final day of instruction for Grade 12 students is Friday 28th April. Students will only be required to come to school for their exams, and to submit projects to meet the deadline set by their teachers. There will not be instruction for Grade 12 students because Grade 12 teachers will be proctoring exams. This means that we will not offer supervision for our 12th grade scholars when they are not in examination halls or submitting their projects. As such, if students want to spend additional time reviewing with their teachers, they must schedule this with them ahead of time.
For Grades 9-11 students, assessments will take place during class time. Projects and exams will be assessed during regular class time with their teacher, depending on what day they have their class (white or blue). The only exception is the Math exams which will all take place on Friday 26th May.
Information about DP1 Exams is to follow from Mr. John Thompson, our IBDP Coordinator. Attendance for these exams is mandatory.
Assessment time is held during the school day and as such, students will be required to dress in their appropriate school uniform:
For seniors this is either the school uniform or their senior sweatshirt/letterman jacket, plain black shirt and slacks.
For grades 9-11, students are asked to wear their appropriate full school uniform. Students who wear the grey GAA sweatshirt must wear the light blue collared shirt and all must wear the appropriate slacks and shoes. The athlete hoodies are not to be worn except on their game day and school spirit days.
