Hey all! We’re pleased to announce that we just had our first Reading Ambassadors meeting this October! We went through the usual protocol: introducing what our group was all about, our objectives, (and most importantly, why we are different from the Book Club) and we all exchanged self-introductions, talking about our favorite genres and why we like them.
This flowed nicely into our main activity for this meeting: a quiz that showed each of us what type of book reader we were. Most of us turned out to be open-minded readers, with some half-hearted readers and devoted readers in the mix, as well as a purist.
We finished off with talking about our “Take Home Activity”, which was just uploading a one-minute video talking about our favorite authors to Flipgrid, and talking about how we were going to handle our next meeting two weeks in advance for Author’s Day.
We hope it was a fun experience for everyone and that it reminded you to finally pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read for so long. - Arim Lim, Club Leader

Earth Girl by Janet Edwards is a dystopian book mainly set in Earth but also includes other planets. Jarra, the main character is an "ape" or basically an outcast. While the rest of the worlds portals to different planets, Jarra and the rest of the "apes" are stuck on Earth due to their weak immune system, restricting them. Most of the apes are abandoned by their parents on Earth from different planets, creating a lot of resentment. The book follows the thoughts of Jarra, as she creates a fake background for herself to blend in with the rest of the university students from otherworlds, the "norms".
I, personally, loved this book because of the main character and its diversity. It doesn't explicitly include one genre, it focuses on many more such as romance, science, adventure. Moreover, it is an archaeology themed book which makes it interesting as I haven't come across a lot of books from this career. I would definitely recommend this book, Jarra is a complex character, she is prideful, confident yet she suffers from an identity crisis and learns to forgive herself and the norms while Earth is facing a crisis that threatens its existence.
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is a dystopian book. It seems to be a mix of elements from Divergent, Percy Jackson, Twilight but has a huge element of loss which is not as big in other dystopian books. This is one of those books that you can't put down once you have started it. The series is quite long as well, so we see how the characters develop over the course of the book. What makes this book stand out is its complex world, there are shadow hunters, werewolves, vampires, down worlders, demons etc. But this book due to its length gives an in-depth analysis of each of the different groups, and shows differing perspectives in the same categories; it is quite complex but the reader is able to follow along. I would definitely recommend this for avid dystopian readers.
