Issue # 10 - February 7, 2025
At GEMS American Academy, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom walls, embracing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our vibrant school community. This belief comes alive through our cherished tradition—the International Food Festival (IFF)—and our newly launched Cultural Ambassador Program, both of which highlight our commitment to global citizenship and intercultural understanding.
Scheduled for February 15th (from 4-7pm), the International Food Festival is more than just a celebration of cuisine; it is a heartfelt tribute to the diverse backgrounds that shape our student body. The festival provides an opportunity for students, families, and staff to share authentic dishes, stories, and traditions from around the world. Each country team collaborates to offer a taste of "home," creating an environment where cultural exchange thrives.
This event aligns closely with our mission and vision, reflecting the values of diversity, care, and global citizenship. Inspired by Sheikh Zayed’s belief in the power of kindness and shared humanity, the IFF fosters connections across cultures, encouraging students to appreciate and respect the differences that enrich our community. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization."
Building on the spirit of the IFF, we are proud to introduce the Cultural Ambassador Program. This initiative invites students to step into leadership roles, representing their advisory-assigned countries with enthusiasm, respect, and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity.
Cultural Ambassadors are selected based on their passion for cultural exchange, strong communication skills, and commitment to fostering inclusivity. Through this program, students develop global citizenship skills, such as cross-cultural communication, active listening, and critical reflection on stereotypes. They serve as role models, inspiring their peers to engage in meaningful conversations about traditions, values, and histories from around the world.
In today’s interconnected world, the ability to understand and respect cultural differences is not just a valuable skill—it is essential. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and will go on to study, work, and live in even more diverse environments. The IFF and the Cultural Ambassador Program equip them with the knowledge, empathy, and leadership abilities needed to thrive as global citizens.
As we prepare for this year’s International Food Festival, we invite our entire school community to participate with open hearts and curious minds. Whether through sharing a family recipe, volunteering as a Cultural Ambassador, or simply engaging in conversations about different cultures, every contribution helps us build a more inclusive, understanding, and connected community.
Let’s come together to celebrate the beauty of our diversity, one dish, one story, and one connection at a time. I look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Grade 6-9 Parents and Guardians,
The PE Department will host Sports Days for Grades 6-9, each grade level participating on a given day (see below). The event will be held from 8:00-12:25 on the field and the tennis courts. Students must report to their first block for attendance and then head to the field.
Monday 17th February: Grade 6
Tuesday 18th February: Grade 7
Wednesday 19th February: Grade 8
Thursday 20th February: Grade 9
Students will participate in a number of events including dodgeball, football, handball, relay and Tug of War.
Please note that while we segregate our PE classes during our normal academic schedule, Sports Day will not be segregated, it is a mixed-gender event. The goals for the day are competitive activities, grade-level team building and raising awareness of how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Please ensure that your child is in full PE uniform on the assigned day and brings a hat and a water bottle to refill throughout the day.
Students will be expected to attend their 4th period after lunch on their designated day. Thank you for your support in making Sports Day a fun event.
Dear Families,
We had our monthly assemblies this week. At our assemblies we go over school expectations and give out awards. It is a great way to celebrate students!
A reminder about food and birthdays. We do not allow students to bring in food for their class for birthdays. I know if is a fun way to celebrate, but we have to be mindful of allergies and our food policy.
It was counselor appreciation week this week! We are so thankful for Ms. Almyra and everything she does for our students.
Next week is a white week. Thursday starts with F block.
No School Monday-Wednesday for students
Teacher Professional Development on Wednesday
Have a wonderful weekend!
