A PYP School seeks not only to create knowledgeable students but students who can adapt to the changing world because they have a set of skills that are essential for any situation. A PYP curriculum doesn’t just think about what we want students to know, but what we want students to be able to do. The 5 Approaches to Learning (Skills) that we intentionally develop with students are: Thinking skills, Social Skills, Self-Management Skills and Research Skills. Each of these skills is broken down into subcategories that are focused on during different units of the year.
Focusing on these approaches to learning sets a PYP school apart from schools that focus solely on content. Instead of producing students who have memorized facts and procedures, PYP schools produce graduates who are capable of analyzing issues from multiple perspectives, setting their own goals, communicate effectively in a variety of settings and with a variety of tools, work efficiently with groups of people, as well as, being able to work alone. PYP schools prepare students for an ever changing world.

Grade 1D has been busy being mathematicians and inquiring into all things shapes! We are beginning our new math module where students are learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. Students are beginning to use and understand important vocabulary when describing shapes and their attributes, such as ‘vertex’ and ‘similar’. We are finding different ways to use shapes to compose pictures, buildings, and many other wonderful things using our imaginations. Shapes are an important concept because they are directly tied to the foundation of spatial reasoning so try exploring shapes at home with your student!
Grade 4 recently launched a new unit called How the World Works. This unit is focused on an inquiry into the natural world. Students will learn more about how the characteristics of living things help them survive in their environment. We recently learned about biomimicry and the important role plants and animals play in solving human problems. The students were asked to think about an invention they could create based on ideas from plants and animals. These are a few of their designs.
