83% of suncare products contain microplastics, polluting oceans, ruining ecosystems, and killing animals (including our namesake, whales!!). It's not even safe for us! The FDA conducted a study of 8 common active sunscreen ingredients, of which, only 2 were deemed safe. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (which caused cancer in rats when they breathed it in) disrupt hormones. Carcinogens enter our bodies, and we do almost nothing about it. As if the harm we bring to ourselves isn't enough to end this horrid practice, most of these active ingredients harm marine life (except Zinc Oxide). This is why we need this sunscreen, to fix all these problems. Additionally, many products, such as hand sanitizers and shampoo, contain microplastics. After sunscreen, our next step would be to help the oceans by improving certain products and mitigating their effects on the oceans. As a result, our 2 goals are safe products and cheap products. In total, the bottle of sunscreen costs $40, and if we were to mass produce our product, we would buy in bulk, therefore lowering the cost per bottle to around $25 for a bottle.
